advantageous bridge on PRC stake: Many advantages suitable for highways

This is the assessment of the Vietnam Construction Association of the pivotal overpass technology solution for expressway projects to speed up the construction of the national expressway system while still meeting quality while the cost is only 1/3 of the investment capital of existing overpass expressways nationwide.

At the thematic report conference on the project "Technology for building overpasses - Technology for constructing high-intensity vucked concrete bridges on PRC piles for expressways researched by Hoa Binh Company" on January 13, 2025, the Vietnam Construction Association assessed that the bridge solution on PRC piles is suitable for applying overpasses to replace embankment foundation from 3m - 10m high, the bridgehead in weak geological areas, roadbed locations in areas with extremely weak geology, requiring complex handling, requiring a lot of loading time, especially roadbed locations through weak geological areas from 20m - 35m thick, agricultural production areas. Thus, this solution is suitable for the construction of highways and light railways in urban areas.

The General Meeting assessed that the early implementation of the Deposit Bridge solution will help save budget, meet environmental protection requirements, ensure sustainable development, and complete the goal of building 3,000km of expressway in the 2021 - 2025 period and 2,000km in the 2026 - 2030 period.

Previously, the pivoted pivot bridge solution was piloted on a 500m long section, including 65 spans of 7.75m, divided into 3 joints, built 2 floors in Xuan Cau duty-free area, Hai Phong city.

The Center for Science, Technology and Investment Consulting (Da Nang University of Science and Technology) and BKG Joint Stock Company have tested and assessed the load-bearing capacity of the overpass structure from February 2024 to June 2024. The inspection results showed that the overpass structure fully meets the requirements of the design.

On June 4, 2024, the Ministry of Transport announced Conclusion No. 123/TB-BGTVT on the proposal of a number of solutions for investment in the construction of transport infrastructure of Hoa Binh Company; assigned the Institute of Transport Science and Technology to establish an Assessment Advisory Group.

Based on the report of the Institute of Transport Science and Technology, the Ministry of Transport issued Document No. 8126/BGTVT-CQLXD dated July 31, 2024, in which it highly appreciated the overpass solutions for traffic construction projects with many advantages such as fast construction and environmental friendliness.

In addition, according to the calculation of the Control Research and Consulting Center, the cost of construction investment under the Institute of Construction Economics (Ministry of Construction), the cost of investment in the construction of highway overpasses is only from 12 - 13.7 million VND/m2. Meanwhile, the investment capital compared to the traditional overpass option is from 27 - 33 million VND/m2 for construction.

Explaining the difference in this technology, Dr. Tran Ba Viet, Vice President of the Vietnam Construction Materials Association and Vice President of the Vietnam Concrete Association, said: The technology of constructing high-intensity concrete bridge piles on PRC piles (pipe-based bridge solution) is a bridge structure solution according to the load-bearing frame diagram integrated with flexible pillar abutments from the assembly structure of technology that has been applied in the construction of overpass expressways in China, Indonesia, Germany and Taiwan in recent years. In Vietnam, this type of structure has been applied in some projects, but has not been widely applied.

"With new technology, concrete components for the construction of overpasses and high-altitude urban railways are standardized, precast, and mass-produced at factories, without having to pour concrete for piles and beams directly on the construction site, so construction is faster, the quality of beams and piles is guaranteed. In particular, because concrete components are manufactured simultaneously in the factory, they are very economical" - Mr. Viet said.

The new technology solution - the replacement on PRC piles also helps promote the production and consumption of cement, steel and construction materials, improve labor productivity in the construction industry by developing concrete component factories, developing technical human resources in industrializing the field of transport infrastructure construction, gradually building strong transport infrastructure construction enterprises, capable of supporting large projects in the country.
