The family of Ms. Thi Xet (born in 1984), residing in Quarter 3, Thu Ba Town, An Bien District (Kien Giang) currently has 5 members living together. However, all daily expenses depend on the small income Ms. Xet earns from selling lottery tickets.
Sitting quietly in a house with leaky, rickety pillars, Mr. Danh Moi (born in 1984, Thi Xet's husband) sadly shared that 7 years ago, he unfortunately had a traffic accident and lost his ability to work. The sequelae of a traumatic brain injury made the normally strong man disabled, sometimes even having difficulty with his hands and feet. Since then, the burden of the family has fallen on Ms. Xet's shoulders.
Mr. Muoi confided that he did not want to be a burden to his wife and children, but he was powerless. “I can only do light work when my health allows. Seeing my wife and children work hard makes me sad. I am a husband but I cannot take care of them, leaving my wife to take on all the work of earning money and taking care of the children. Sometimes I wish there was a miracle that would make me healthy again and able to work like before to take care of my wife and children, rebuild the house so that my family can have a safe place to live,” Mr. Muoi said.

Ms. Thi Xet, a woman who was only familiar with housework, now has to take care of her husband's life. With the burden of food, clothing, rice, and money, she has to do all kinds of jobs, from cutting and weeding rice for hire to doing housework. As long as she has money to take care of her family and her children's education, she will do whatever job anyone hires her to do and then switch to selling lottery tickets.
The suffering did not stop there, because of fainting many times due to overwork, Ms. Xet went to the doctor and found out that she had heart disease. "If we can't even afford food and clothing, how can we have money for treatment? We just have to work hard to take care of our husband and children," Ms. Xet said, choking up.
Ms. Xet knows that her health problems do not allow her to work much, but every day after selling 150 lottery tickets, she accepts extra work if someone hires her.
The eldest daughter is grown and has her own family. The second son was born in 2009 but dropped out of school due to poverty. There are two other children, one in 8th grade and the other in 5th grade.
The mother and wife who worked hard to take care of her family now only wishes to have money to rebuild a new house so that her family can have a more stable place to live, especially when the rainy season comes. She hopes to have good health to earn money to take care of her children's education, but she has never wished for anything personal.
Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Cam - Vice President of the Women's Union of Thu Ba town said that Ms. Xet's situation is very difficult, her house is seriously degraded. When it rains heavily, the whole family moves to the back house to sleep temporarily because of the leaking rain.
“The local government has provided assistance many times, but it is nothing compared to the current difficulties. We hope that kind-hearted people near and far can help Ms. Xet’s family to repair or rebuild their house first because they are also worried about the rainy season and are afraid that it will collapse at any time,” Ms. Cam shared.
