With the guidance of the people, in early December, reporters from Lao Dong Newspaper visited the family of two brothers Tran Ngoc Son and Tran Ngoc Lam in Zone 11, Tien Kien Commune - a very difficult situation in need of help from the community.
In a small, old house with no valuables, Ms. Pham Thi Ly (45 years old) - mother of the two brothers Son and Lam - told reporters that both Son and Lam were healthy when they were born like other children, but strangely, the older they got, the more stunted they became, showing strange signs such as not being able to run or jump, stiff calves, and underdeveloped brains... Until more than 5 years ago, both brothers had muscle atrophy and paralysis, leading to them being bedridden and unable to move.
Ms. Ly said that in 2006, she and her husband, Mr. Tran Van Cuong, gave birth to their first child, named Tran Ngoc Son. As Son grew older, he became weaker and weaker, unable to function normally. Because of the family's difficult circumstances, not making enough to eat, Mr. Cuong and Ms. Ly did not have money to take their child to the doctor.
"In early 2019, while going to school with his friends, Son gradually became weak and was brought home. At that time, the family took him to the district hospital for a check-up, and the doctors informed him that Son had brittle bone disease," Ms. Ly sadly recalled.
Like his brother, Tran Ngoc Lam (born in 2009) was born healthy, had a happy childhood, went to school, went out to play like his peers. Although his awareness was still poor, it was the best time of Lam's life before the serious illness struck.
The older child's condition had not improved, and in mid-2019, her family received bad news from the youngest son, Tran Ngoc Lam, who also had brittle bone disease. Like his brother, Lam's limbs gradually atrophied and he could no longer walk.
“Our family is poor and both of our children are sick and have become disabled for life. With no money for treatment, my husband and I can only helplessly watch our children go through months of suffering from illness,” said Ms. Ly helplessly.
The family is poor, the children are sick, and Ms. Ly's health is not good either. She only stays at home to take care of her two children, occasionally working for half a day to earn money to make ends meet. The cost of living and medical treatment depends on a few fields of rice and her husband's unstable work.
Not only that, 2 years ago, Mr. Cuong and his wife, Ms. Ly, borrowed money from the bank under the poor household program to buy buffalo and cows to raise. Not only did the price of buffalo and cows drop, but last June, one of the family's buffaloes was struck and killed by lightning. Difficulties piled on difficulties, Ms. Ly did not know how to manage to have money to continue treating her child's illness and repay the bank loan.
Swallowing her tears, Ms. Ly said: “Our house is also rented by my grandparents. My husband and I have no house or land. Recently, we thought our youngest child would die, but luckily he is healthy again. Now, I just hope to have the health to earn money and take care of my children's food and sleep. As long as they are with me, no matter how difficult it is, it is still the greatest happiness for my husband and I.”
Talking about Ms. Ly's family situation, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dat - Vice Chairman of Tien Kien Commune People's Committee (Lam Thao District, Phu Tho Province) - shared: "Mr. and Mrs. Cuong Ly's family has been a poor household in the commune for many years, with two children suffering from terrible diseases. The family's situation is really miserable and difficult, and we hope to receive help from the community."
