Regulations on the age of car and motorbike drivers

A reader with email thanhxuanxxx@gmail.com asked: How is the age of a car or motorbike driver regulated?

The Lao Dong Newspaper Legal Consulting Office replied:

Article 59 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety 2024 (effective from January 1, 2025) stipulates the age and health of drivers participating in road traffic

1. The age of drivers and specialized motorbike operators is regulated as follows:

a) People aged 16 and over are allowed to drive a motorbike;

b) People aged 18 and over who are granted driving licenses of classes A1, A, B1, B, C1, are granted certificates of training in road traffic law to drive specialized motorbikes participating in road traffic;

c) People aged 21 and over are granted a Class C, BE driving license;

d) People aged 24 and over are granted driving licenses of classes D1, D2, C1E, CE;

d) People aged 27 and over are granted driving licenses of class D, D1E, D2E, DE;

e) The maximum age for drivers of passenger cars (including buses) with more than 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat) and sleeper cars is 57 years old for men and 55 years old for women.

2. Drivers of vehicles participating in road traffic must ensure suitable health conditions for each type of vehicle allowed to be driven. The Minister of Health stipulates health standards, health check-ups for drivers and specialized motorbike operators; periodic health check-ups for car drivers; building a database on the health of drivers and specialized motorbike operators.

3. The Minister of National Defense and the Minister of Public Security stipulate the age of drivers in the military and police forces performing national defense and security tasks.

Thus, from January 1, 2025, the age of car and motorbike drivers is regulated as above.
