On the evening of November 22, the new TV series “When the phone rings” will premiere.
The work is adapted from the novel of the same name, telling the story of the arranged marriage of Baek Sa Eon (Yoo Yeon Seok) - the youngest spokesperson of the Blue House and Hong Hee Joo (Chae Soo Bin) - a sign language interpreter who lost the ability to speak after a childhood accident.
The two only truly developed feelings for each other after a mysterious phone call, when Hee Joo was kidnapped by a mysterious figure.
Following the romantic and mysterious motif, “When the phone rings” is notable for the participation of Yoo Yeon Seok - an actor who has made an impression with many films such as “Reply 1994”, “Dr. Moral 1”, “Mr. Sunshine”, “Talented Doctors”, “Explaining Love”, “Bloody Lucky Day”...
Talking about the new project, the 40-year-old star said he was attracted by the content and the way the character Baek Sa Eon was built. To him, Sa Ron is someone who seems to have everything - from background, appearance and talent, but also has to face many choices, especially the struggle in love.
“In the film, Sa Eon experiences a major change in her seemingly perfect life when she receives a threatening call from a kidnapper.
With each new episode, viewers will be able to discover new aspects of the character revealed layer by layer, like an onion, beneath his cold and icy exterior,” Yoo Yeon Seok explained.
In this project, the male star paid special attention to the way he expressed his emotions as well as wearing a suit. He admitted that his personality and Sa Eon's are different in many aspects, but when he transformed into the character, he felt interesting, as he started to resemble that person more.
Yoo Yeon Seok also praised his co-star Chae Soo Bin. He believes their chemistry will be well portrayed in the film as they work hard together and learn sign language.
However, the media raised many concerns about how Chae Soo Bin expressed the emotions of Hong Hee Joo - who is considered a real-life mermaid when she works as a sign language interpreter despite being unable to speak.
The reason is because the actress born in 1994 has participated in many films such as "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds", "The Legend of Hong Gil Dong", "The World's Best Delivery Man", "Half a Puzzle", "Sour and Sweet", "Rookie Police", "The Fashionable Quartet"... but has not made any outstanding impression.
According to Korean newspapers, Chae Soo Bin's strong point is her sweet and cute beauty. In March this year, she even surpassed many colleagues such as Song Hye Kyo, Jisoo, Suzy, Han Hyo Joo to top the KingChoice's poll for the most beautiful Korean actress of 2024.
However, her weakness is her big eyes, which can easily lead to glaring when acting. Her acting is not stiff, but her choice of characters is considered one-dimensional. The roles she has played so far are mostly positive, bright characters.
Therefore, having to transform into a somewhat sad character who can only convey emotions through eyes, expressions and actions instead of words like Hong Hee Joo will be a new challenge that Chae Soo Bin must overcome.
