Resident Playbook is a spin-off of the medical drama Hospital Playlist.
The work follows the first-year obstetricians and gynecologists at Jongno Yulje Hospital, including Oh Yi Young (Go one Jung), Pyo Nam Kyung (Shin Si Ah), um um Jae Il (Kang You Seok) and Kim Sa Bi ( Han Ye Ji) as they overcome the ups and downs to become doctors and seek their position in society.
Initially, Resident Playbook was scheduled to air in May 2024 but was delayed many times due to the strikes of doctors in Korea.
After the film's release date was set for April 12, many audiences expressed their expectations to enjoy a warm and everyday medical film, when the production team and cast are all famous and talented names.
In fact, the audience's expectations are not unfounded, because if we compare them with the stories of experienced professors in the movie "The Talented Doctors", "Resident Playbook" brings curiosity when the resident doctors are lacking in experience, both in medical skills and social interaction.
For them, every day brings unpredictable challenges, with scolding mixed with encouragement to improve themselves. This is expected to make viewers sympathize, as everyone has experienced the initial journey of their career in a difficult way.
Along with that, the setting of the obstetrics and gynecology department at the hospital helps the film create sympathy when it not only focuses on the stories of doctors and nurses but also emphasizes the experiences of future mothers, patients and their families.
Speaking further about this, Shin Won Ho - director of the series Replies, Skilled Doctors currently participating in Resident Playbook as creators said that the crew wants to bring a new perspective to viewers by focusing on stories from the two fields of obstetrics and gynecology.
Among all departments in the hospital, obstetrics and gynecology is the only department that includes all stages of life - labor, aging, illness and death. That is the reason why we chose this department to carry out the work.
I think obstetrics and gynecology is not the only department where people cry, but they still receive congratulations. Obstetrics and Gynecology refers to the beginning of life, while gynecology describes painful moments and even the end of life. That is a department that people can indirectly witness for their entire lives".
Director Shin added that Resident Playbook is a story about all the beginnings in the world, about young professionals starting their first job, newborns and women becoming mothers for the first time; the audience will love that perspective when watching the work.
