According to the announcement of K-EnterTechHub Media Research Institute (Korea), the profits of parts 1 and 2 of the movie "Squid Game" show a difference.
“Squid Game 1” is said to have grossed around 1 trillion won with a production cost of 25 billion won. The film achieved a 40x return on investment, attracting significant attention in the global content market.
Meanwhile, “Squid Game 2” cost about 100 billion won to produce and quickly topped Netflix’s global non-English TV show rankings after just 2 days of release, despite mixed reviews about its content and acting.
According to FlixPatrol, it took the first part of the film eight days to achieve a perfect score (930 points) in 93 countries and regions, while the second part achieved this milestone at a much faster pace. Based on this figure, K-EnterTechHub estimates that the revenue of “Squid Game 2” could reach at least 1.5 trillion won, 10 times the production cost.
Han Jung Hoon - CEO of K-EnterTechHub revealed more with Yonhap News, although season 2 did not achieve the same profit as season 1, with the popularity of the film, Netflix still benefited from the increase in stock price and the number of new subscribers on the platform. Business activities and attractions based on the film also made significant profits.
Another plus point of “Squid Game 2” is that it contributes to increasing the importance of Korea in Netflix’s global content strategy. This is also the reason why right after the release of season 2, season 3 of the film was also revealed.
According to the producer, “Squid Game 3” is scheduled to be released on June 27, 2025. In this part, in addition to Younghee - the iconic doll in the game “Red Light, Green Light” in the first season, Cheolsu will appear.
However, the information that actor Leonardo DiCaprio will appear in part 3 was quickly denied by Netflix: "We have heard rumors about Leonardo DiCaprio's appearance, but that is not true."
