Adapted from the novel “Influenza,” “Newtopia” tells the story of soldier Lee Jae Yoon (Park Jung Min) and his girlfriend Kang Yeong Joo (Jisoo).
They fight together in Seoul (South Korea) - where everyone is infected with a mysterious virus. Not only do they have to face zombies, but they also have to overcome many challenges to protect their love.
Scheduled to premiere on February 7 on Coupang Play, “Newtopia” is attracting attention as a “zom-com” (romantic zombie comedy).
This was revealed by Yoon Sung Hyun to the media on January 6. According to the male director, “Newtopia” will be a work with “a different approach and tone compared to traditional zombie stories”.
“It’s a combination of seemingly incompatible themes – romance and zombies, humor and bold imagery. Each element stands out on its own, but when combined, they create a unique energy.
Although the film is set in a dystopian world, from the perspective of the main characters, the film also opens up a new, unexplored world.
“Newtopia” carries a message of hope amid adversity, which is reflected in the film's title,” the director explained.
Meanwhile, Park Jung Min shared: “I always trusted the director, and there were many moments on set that made me amazed by what I saw on screen. It was a meaningful and new project.”
Jisoo said, “The director has a clear vision, which gave us confidence during filming. Working with him was a joy.”
The Blackpink member is also very excited about this role. Jisoo said that she was attracted to Yeong Joo's charm from the beginning, and wanted to portray the character as realistically as possible. She hopes that the audience will enjoy watching Yeong Joo grow in many ways.
Director Yoon Sung Hyun also praised Jisoo's acting. He assessed that Jisoo's personality and humor matched 99% with the character Yeong Joo that he envisioned in the script.
