Directed by Hur Jin Ho - famous for the film "The Last Princess", "A Normal Family" is based on the novel "The Dinner" by Dutch writer Herman Koch.
The film revolves around the lives of two families turned upside down after watching security camera footage of crimes involving their children. They are lawyer Jae Wan (Sol Kyung Gu) - interpreter Yeon Kyung (Kim Hee Ae) and pediatrician Jae Gyu (Jang Dong Gun) - and his wife - Ji Su (Claudia Kim).
According to the Korea Times, before officially releasing in theaters in Korea in October, "A Normal Family" has received attention from audiences after being invited to attend prestigious film festivals around the world, including the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. In October, the film will also be screened at the Busan International Film Festival (Korea).
Sharing about the project, Hur Jin Ho confidently said that the audience will witness unprecedented tension thanks to the participation of 4 famous actors. "I thought about how to portray the development of each actor's beliefs in a way that is both tense and natural."
As the fourth person to make a film adaptation of the original novel, the director born in 1963 commented that the novel's message contains points that he was curious about current Korean society and people. "I included some elements that could make a difference to suit the Korean context."
Meanwhile, the four actors are also excited about the new project. Sol Kyung Gu revealed that they all got very into their roles during filming.
"All four actors filmed continuously without losing tension. Although this is not an action film, the intensity of the film is so great that we often joke that we 'fight with words' because the characters have strong dialogue exchanges."
Meanwhile, Jang Dong Gun - the actor returning to the big screen after 6 years said that this work will make viewers think a lot about what kind of person you are and what you would do in a similar situation.
"Watching security camera footage of my child's crime scene is a situation I don't want to imagine. But having a child, I ended up imagining it too specifically," he said.
For Kim Hee Ae , this is the third project she and "Emperor" Sol Kyung Gu have collaborated on after the movies "The Moon" (The Moon: The Last Mission) and "The Whirlwind" (The Whirlwind), so they had no difficulty playing the role of a married couple.
Besides, the actress surprised the media when sharing about her co-stars: "They are top stars and actors in Korea, and when I saw them approach their roles so diligently, I tried my best not to become the weak link in the overall picture."
