On the morning of December 11, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters recorded that at the fish pond in Thach Ha commune (near Ho Do bridge) and Ho Do commune, dead pomfret fish floated white in the pond, washed ashore and emitted a foul smell. According to observations, most of the dead fish weighed between 500g and 700g.
At this time, the pond owner sent people to row two small boats to collect the dead fish to destroy them, to limit environmental pollution.
Mr. Nguyen Song Han - Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Ha commune - said that fish have been dying in a fish pond of a business located in the area for nearly a week now.
This is a lake for raising pomfret fish, with an area of 36 hectares, located in Thach Ha and Ho Do communes.
According to Mr. Han, the estimated number of dead fish is about 1.5 tons, equivalent to a loss of about 100 million VND.
Regarding the cause of fish deaths, according to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Ha commune, due to the recent heavy rain, this saltwater fish pond became fresh, causing saltwater fish to be shocked by fresh water.
After the fish deaths, local authorities asked the lake owner to urgently collect and destroy the dead fish to limit environmental pollution.
However, the fish deaths have lasted for many days and the lake area is too large, so the removal of dead fish has not been thorough and is still being carried out.
According to Mr. Han, the owner of this lake has raised pomfret for many years. However, this is the first time such a large number of fish have died.
