In the early days of the rainy season, the situation of riverbank and canal erosion in Can Tho City continues to be complicated, affecting the lives of people living along the river.
Recently, in the early morning of June 6, in area 5, O Mon ward, a riverbank landslide about 30m long occurred. The incident affected 2 households, of which 1 house collapsed into the river. No casualties.

Previously, on May 18, a serious landslide occurred along the Ben Ba River, Hung Phu ward, causing a section of concrete road tens of meters long to completely collapse into the river. Many locations showed frog holes eating deep into the mainland, dragging down green trees and fences of households into the water.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang - a local resident said that the landslide occurred at about 3 am. Initially, the riverside land subsided locally, then patches of soil and concrete foundation continued to fall into the river, causing the landslide scope to expand to neighboring areas.

In Nhon My commune, at the end of April, a serious landslide damaged about 30m of concrete road, penetrated deep into the mainland by 12m and completely collapsed a prefabricated house of a household.
As one of the affected households, Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuy is still in shock when recalling the time of the incident.
At about 1 am, the whole family was sleeping when my husband heard a very loud earth moving sound. Only about an hour later, the family's grocery store collapsed into the river. After the night of the landslide, the soil continued to subside twice more, breaking the concrete road and eating close to the remaining part of the house," Ms. Thuy said.
Regarding this situation, leaders of Nhon My Commune People's Committee said that the commune has mobilized all shock forces according to the "4 on-the-spot" motto, together with the Police, Military and grassroots security forces to support people to dismantle houses and relocate property.
In addition, Nhon My commune has issued an urgent document to the Can Tho City People's Committee requesting capital support of 6.5 billion VND to build solid embankments at key points and support the relocation of households who have lost their homes.

Faced with the complicated developments of the landslide situation, on May 13, Can Tho City People's Committee issued Decision No. 2201/QD-UBND announcing an emergency situation of natural disaster for the riverbank landslide incident in Phung An hamlet, Nhon My commune.
Mr. Tran Chi Hung - Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee informed that the landslide situation in the area is becoming increasingly complicated and unpredictable. The biggest difficulty currently is the relocation of people out of dangerous areas due to the long-standing habit of living associated with rivers and water of people.
In addition, the city is lacking suitable resettlement land fund for poor households living in temporary houses along the river without legal land use rights, leading to many procedural obstacles.
According to a report by the Sub-Department of Irrigation (Department of Agriculture and Environment), by the end of May 26, 3 types of natural disasters had been recorded in Can Tho City, including: riverbank and coastal erosion; rain with thunderstorms and saltwater intrusion.
In which, riverbank and coastal erosion occurred 60 times in many localities. Specifically, Nhon My commune recorded 43 erosion points; Hung Phu ward 4 points; Dong Phuoc commune 3 points; Nhon Ai commune, Trung Nhut ward and Thuan Hung ward each locality 2 points; Thoi An Hoi, Dai Hai, Vinh Thanh and Thoi Lai communes each locality 1 point. The total length of erosion points is nearly 1,500m.
Natural disasters have affected 14 houses, of which 12 were partially affected and 2 were landslides in the back of the houses. In addition, some rural traffic routes were also affected. To date, no casualties have been recorded.
