Experts talk about the 100-second red light in Ho Chi Minh City

NHƯ QUỲNH |

HCMC - Faced with the problem of red lights lasting 5 times longer than green lights, experts say that the arrangement of light duration depends on many factors.

According to Lao Dong's records at some intersections such as My Thuy, An Phu (Thu Duc City)..., traffic is heavy, with many container trucks and trucks regularly passing through this area.

It was observed that the traffic lights on all sides at My Thuy intersection (Thu Duc City) have a large time difference. In the motorbike lane, the red light is about 100 seconds and the green light is about 20 seconds.

This causes congestion at times, with vehicles lining up to pass through the intersection. This is also a black spot for traffic accidents in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ms. Luu Tuyet Mai shared that during rush hour, traffic at My Thuy intersection is very crowded, and one has to wait a long time to get through the intersection.

"The green light is short, so many times I can't get through the intersection in time and get stuck between large vehicles starting to move from all directions. Every time I go through this intersection, I get very nervous," said Ms. Mai.

Similarly, at An Phu intersection (Thu Duc City), traffic density is high, congestion often occurs, especially during rush hour.

Mr. Tran Hoai Nam, an office worker in District 1, said that traffic jams here happen especially at the end of the year, when people's travel needs increase, making traffic jams even more serious.

"Sometimes I have to stop at 3-4 red lights, sometimes there is a traffic jam that takes about 15 minutes to get through the intersection," said Mr. Nam.

Talking to PV of Lao Dong Newspaper, Dr. Phan Le Binh - Traffic expert, Chief Representative of OCG Japan Consulting Office said that currently, traffic volume in Ho Chi Minh City is almost saturated, traffic density is very high, so even a small change or incident can affect the traffic situation.

"The basic principle is to arrange long green light phases for directions with high traffic volume or directions with priority traffic and long red light phases for directions with low traffic volume or directions with low priority traffic.

Meanwhile, traffic volume can change according to each time frame of the day and each day is different, so it is necessary to arrange the appropriate traffic light duration. However, to solve the traffic light cycle that is always suitable for traffic volume is difficult, requiring the combination of many other factors such as AI, cameras counting vehicles in each direction...", Mr. Binh informed.

According to Mr. Do Ngoc Hai - Head of the Department of Road Traffic Infrastructure Management (HCMC Department of Transport), the traffic light system is considered for adjustment based on two main factors: congestion and accidents, so it is necessary to consider carefully before adjusting and pay special attention to faulty traffic light poles.

Experts also affirmed that the regulations are obviously intended to ensure traffic safety for people, but at first, people are unfamiliar with them and need time to adapt. At the same time, supplement and adjust surrounding factors to make regulations more stringent and ensure good compliance with traffic safety order, contributing to creating a civilized traffic culture.
