Provincial Road 158 is the backbone route running from A Mu Sung and A Lu communes to the highland tourist commune of Y Ty in Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province.
The flood in early September caused this road to be almost completely eroded, making it difficult for people traveling along the road. Along with that, there are hidden dangers, landslides lurking and threatening.
It is known that Provincial Road 158 is one of the main roads running from A Mu Sung commune to the highland tourist commune of Y Ty. This is the main traffic route of A Mu Sung commune, with about 80% of villages and residents living along the road.
On November 23-24, on the above-mentioned road, the section passing through A Mu Sung and A Lu communes, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters recorded that the road had many landslides, the renovation work had been stopped and there were no signs of continuing construction.
According to research, to facilitate people's travel and synchronize traffic infrastructure, the project to renovate and upgrade Provincial Road 156, Ban Vuoc - Ngoi Phat section and Provincial Road 158, Ngai Thau - A Mu Sung section, Bat Xat district has been implemented.
In which, the section from A Mu Sung to Ngai Thau belongs to package No. 13 invested by Lao Cai Province Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board with a capital of more than 99 billion VND.
The construction unit is a joint venture between Viet Duc Anh Investment and Development Company Limited and Lao Cai Bridge Construction Joint Stock Company. The project started in December 2023 and is expected to be completed in April 2025.
In reality, from Km11+00-Km23+00 of Provincial Road 158, along the way, many negative slope sections and concrete embankment toes have been deeply eroded, exposing the foundation even though the project has not been completed.
Not only that, the impact of storms and floods also caused the steel pile system of a bridge to bend during construction.
At another bridge, the soil underneath the foot was eroded, exposing the concrete pillar structure.
According to information from the Lao Cai Provincial Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board, for the road section, the contractor is currently casting concrete pipe components, assembling longitudinal groove concrete slabs, gathering materials; digging the roadbed at Km21+00. The bridge section has constructed 6/6 bored piles and M2 abutment; casting 5/5 girder slabs of Ngai Tro bridge.
Mr. Lu A Hung (A Mu Sung commune, Bat Xat district) shared: "Provincial Road 158 suffered extremely serious landslides after storm No. 3. Many sections are rough and have no lights, so it is quite dangerous at night."
According to Mr. Hung, people in the commune really hope that the road renovation will be soon re-implemented and completed so that travel is safe.
On November 24, speaking with Lao Dong Newspaper, Chairman of the People's Committee of A Mu Sung Commune, Lu A Hoa, said: After the storm and flood, Provincial Road 158 was almost completely eroded. Currently, the first step has been overcome for people to travel, but restoring it to its previous state is very difficult.
“The road construction process has stopped and is waiting for the province’s direction. The project’s completion in the first quarter of 2025 is not feasible with the current landslide situation,” said the Chairman of the People’s Committee of A Mu Sung commune.
Y Ty is a famous tourist destination in Lao Cai, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to visit and experience the natural landscape and culture of the indigenous people.
