According to the Department of Hydrometeorology, from the beginning of 2025 to now, there have been 21 storms/tropical depressions active in the East Sea (including 15 storms and 6 tropical depressions). This year also became the year with the largest number of storms/tropical depressions active in the East Sea since records were available (since 1961). The previous year with the most tropical cyclones was 2017 with 20 storms/tropical depressions.
According to meteorologists, during the neutral ENSO year and the La Nina year, Vietnam, the Philippines and countries in the region will have more storms. Although the number of storms this year has exceeded the record, it is not ruled out the possibility of continuing to appear.
It is forecasted that from now until the end of 2025, there will be 1 - 2 storms or tropical depressions in the East Sea. According to the average data of many years, in December, there will be about 1 storm or tropical depression in the East Sea, 0.2 of which will make landfall in Vietnam.
According to the meteorological law, the area at risk of being affected by tropical cyclones during the above period is usually the Central region or the southern provinces.
Regarding the cold air trend, in December 2025, cold air will continue to increase in frequency and intensity and may experience severe cold concentrated in the northern mountainous areas of our country.
Along with the activity of cold air and the risk of storms/tropical depressions, it can be the cause of heavy rain in the Central region. It is forecasted that in the provinces/cities from Quang Tri to Da Nang, the east of Quang Ngai province to Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa, there will be widespread heavy rains (concentrated in the first half of December).
On a national scale, there is a continued possibility of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
In the last months of the year, storms, tropical depressions and cold air can cause strong winds, large waves at sea and affect the activities of ships and boats. In particular, beware of heavy rain that can cause flooding, inundation in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas.
In the context of climate change, weather and climate are becoming increasingly complex with many dangerous and extreme forms such as short-term heavy rain, flash floods, landslides, etc.
Therefore, it is recommended that authorities at all levels and people regularly update and integrate hydrometeorological forecast and warning information in short-term bulletins of 1-3 days, to promptly adjust production plans and appropriate response plans, especially appropriate reservoir operation plans, ensure the safety of works and downstream areas, along with ensuring safety for production and people's lives.
In Vietnam, 2025 is recorded as a year with extremely unusual and unusual hydrometeorological disasters, causing serious damage across the country. The total estimated economic damage has exceeded VND 85,000 billion and 409 people have died and gone missing as of the end of November 2025.
