On July 16, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) of Kien Giang province held a launching ceremony "Project of 1 million hectares specializing in high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta until 2030" in Kien Giang province.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Provincial People's Committee has issued an Official Dispatch and Plan to implement the Project, main activities include: Selecting and building areas to participate in the Project; Review, apply and complete technical packages to ensure sustainable development criteria; Reorganizing production and training to improve capacity; Investing in upgrading infrastructure in specialized farming areas; Mobilize resources, technical and financial support from carbon finance funds and support funds around the world; Effectively apply current mechanisms and policies; Coordinate with ministries, branches, institutes and schools to implement approved priority programs and tasks of the Project.
Mr. Le Huu Toan - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the Department has assigned specific tasks to units and organizations to receive, provide information and implement the Project in 2024. Regarding the implementation situation, regulations The registered area for participation is 200,000 hectares, divided into 2 phases. Deployment areas are in 12 districts and cities, including: Giang Thanh, Kien Luong, Hon Dat, Tan Hiep, Chau Thanh, Giong Rieng, Go Quao, An Bien, An Minh, U Minh Thuong, Vinh Thuan and Rach Gia City . The province also proposed that the Steering Committee of the Ministerial-level Project soon issue assignment of tasks and unify project proposals of the provinces so that the provinces can base on synchronous implementation in the entire 12-province region, and soon organize activities. activities to achieve results as approved by the Government.
Some of the main investment items of the Project in the province include: Upgrading irrigation systems, Improving transportation systems, Supporting rice value chain infrastructure, Supporting digital agriculture, Synchronous mechanization... The project is being submitted to the Government by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as a national-level special project.
According to Mr. Le Thanh Tung, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production, the overall effect of the project is to increase the value of the entire chain by 40%, and the profit margin of rice growers increases by 50%. The social effect is that 1 million households are trained and apply sustainable farming. Environmental efficiency is contributing to environmental protection and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (reducing over 10% of greenhouse gas emissions).
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huynh - Director of Phu Hoa Youth Agricultural Service Cooperative, the launch of the project is considered a starting milestone for the determination to act of farmers, businesses and cooperatives in promoting Together, we will build a sustainable rice industry chain. If implemented well, the Project's solutions will not only help increase the value of Kien Giang rice grains but create a sustainable rice production environment for rice production in the next generation.
As the province with the largest rice growing area in the country, Kien Giang's rice output reaches 4.3 million tons each year. From 2024, the province will put 60,000 hectares into production. Phu Hoa Youth Agricultural Service Cooperative is the first cooperative in the province to launch the Project with an area of 50 hectares, 25 households participating.

Most recently, the SRP rice production model, large fields to reduce costs, large fields of organic rice... with current experience, members are determined to effectively implement this project," Mr. Huynh shared. .
