Hanoi is accelerating the progress of a series of inner-city flood control projects, organizing overnight construction to complete before May 30, serving drainage work in the 2026 rainy season.
For many years, after prolonged heavy rains, a series of streets and residential areas in Hanoi have fallen into localized flooding, seriously affecting traffic, daily life and business activities of people.
Areas such as Ke Ve, Dong Thang, Hoa Bang, Nguyen Xuan Khoat, Phung Hung, Bat Dan, Trang Tien - Hang Bai intersection or Resco, Ecohome 1, Ecohome 3 urban areas often have flooding points every time it rains heavily.
Faced with this situation, the City Party Committee and Hanoi People's Committee identified urban flooding as one of the 5 "bottlenecks" that need to be focused on handling with urgent and long-term solutions.

From March 25, the city simultaneously implemented large-scale emergency flood control projects. These include many key items such as renovating the Thuy Phuong canal, downstream of the Kim Nguu River, regulating lake system, pumping stations and drainage culverts at 6 lakes including Thien Quang, Bay Mau, Ba Mau, Linh Quang, Van Chuong and Trung Tu.
Along with that, 16 construction sites on many central streets such as Ly Thai To, Phan Chu Trinh, Le Lai, Quang Trung, Quan Su, Nguyen Trai... were also deployed simultaneously with dozens of construction teams.

To ensure progress, the Hanoi Department of Construction requests investors to strictly implement the spirit of "emergency project - urgent action", organize continuous construction in 3 shifts, 4 teams, increase manpower, machinery and supplement construction teams to compensate for progress.
In the early days of the rainy season, on many urban flood control construction sites, the construction atmosphere is urgent. Contractors mobilize maximum manpower and equipment to accelerate the progress of 22 key items to reduce the risk of flooding in many central areas.

Notably, to limit the impact on traffic and people's lives in hot weather conditions, many items are mainly constructed at night.
Recorded at Quang Trung street, box culvert construction items are being urgently completed by the contractor. The scope of barriers is gradually narrowed to reduce the impact on people's travel.

Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Duc Hung - Director of Hanoi City Technical Infrastructure Management Center - said that the project started on March 25, 2026 with 22 items, including renovating pumping stations at 6 lakes and constructing at 16 points on many central streets.
According to Mr. Hung, due to the specific nature of the narrow ground, there is no location for gathering sewer components, so all materials, manpower and equipment are calculated appropriately according to each working shift.
To minimize the impact on daytime traffic and reduce the impact of hot weather on workers, construction is mainly organized at night, from 10 pm the previous day to 5 am the next morning," Mr. Hung said.

After each construction shift, units must temporarily return the ground, collect materials, transport waste, clean and wash roads to ensure normal traffic conditions before 7 am.
The Hanoi Department of Construction also strengthens on-site inspection and closely monitors the construction process to ensure the quality of the project in accordance with technical regulations.

For projects at risk of delay, the city requests to adjust construction measures, and at the same time consider replacing or supplementing contractors if necessary.

We require contractors to focus maximum manpower and machinery to accelerate progress, and at the same time remove all construction site barriers before May 30 to minimize the impact on the lives of people in the inner city area," Mr. Hung said.
