According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters in the center of Can Tho City after 15 days of implementing Decree 168 (the Decree takes effect from January 1, 2025), the situation of traffic participants running red lights, driving on sidewalks, going in the wrong direction, etc. has significantly decreased.
Observing at some intersections with heavy traffic such as: Nguyen Van Linh - 3/2; Nguyen Van Linh - 30/4; 3/2 - Tran Hung Dao - Mau Than; Tran Hoang Na - Nguyen Van Cu;... traffic participants voluntarily obeyed traffic lights even when there was no traffic police force to check and control.
Mr. Do Trung Ly (28 years old, Ninh Kieu district) shared that Decree 168 since coming into effect has gradually changed people's awareness and sense of responsibility when participating in traffic. From there, it has formed a culture when participating in traffic, creating an image of civilized traffic and urban areas.
Speaking with Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan - Chief of Office of Traffic Safety Committee of Can Tho City - said that the unit has proactively coordinated with relevant units to inspect a number of intersections in Ninh Kieu district to review the traffic light system, adjust the traffic organization plan to suit the actual situation and agree to install additional signs for vehicles turning right at red lights.
According to Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan, through the inspection and survey on the afternoon of January 14, the City Traffic Safety Committee found that currently, some intersections still have many shortcomings that need to be invested in and upgraded; the arrangement of signs is not in accordance with regulations; the road markings are still blurred, therefore, traffic and stopping at intersections cause difficulties for traffic participants.
Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan said that, in addition to the above shortcomings, traffic lights at some intersections have been invested in for a long time, leading to traffic lights being blurred, having technical errors, and even being damaged.
“The Traffic Safety Committee of Can Tho City will issue an urgent document requesting the People's Committee of Ninh Kieu District and its functional departments to conduct a comprehensive review and detailed statistics of each intersection, then work with the route management unit, requesting immediate repairs to ensure consistency, as well as create favorable conditions for traffic participants to circulate conveniently and smoothly,” said Mr. Mai Minh Ngoan.
Regarding Decree 168, the Chief of Office of the Traffic Safety Committee of Can Tho City added that currently, the density of vehicles is increasing due to the need to travel during the upcoming Lunar New Year 2025. The unit also coordinates with functional agencies to increase deployment, organize traffic regulation, flow, and guidance to contribute to ensuring traffic order and safety during the Tet holiday.
According to observations and assessments by the Traffic Safety Committee, after 2 weeks of implementing Decree 168, people have been seriously complying with the provisions of the law, and awareness has increased significantly. The situation of running red lights, encroaching on lanes, and driving on sidewalks has decreased and has contributed to building a friendly and safe traffic environment.
