Unloading Cups to Treat Thousands of Tons of Residuated Waste
Kien Thiet landfill received all household waste in Tien Lang town, Bach Dang commune, Toan Thang commune and part of Tien Minh commune from April 2021 contracted by Thanh Vinh Trading and Tourism Joint Stock Company to be treated with a classification and separation line. Since the beginning of 2023, old screening equipment has not been invested in by businesses, waste is only enzyme-free and not processed, leading to a waste remaining about 10,000 m3, causing public outrage.
However, after many urging times, Thanh Vinh Company has not yet been able to handle the backlog of garbage, so Tien Lang District has decided to terminate the contract with Thanh Vinh Company. In October 2024, Tien Lang district assigned Hai Phong Environmental Services Company Limited to invest in supporting the locality in handling this landfill. The treatment method is to classify and separate each type of waste, and handle it separately according to the physical nature of each basic ingredient. The processing time is expected to be completed by the end of April 2025.
According to Lao Dong reporters, on the afternoon of April 1, Kien Thiet landfill has been largely treated. The landfill with about 2,000 m3 has also been treated. In addition to the amount of old garbage that has accumulated for many years, new garbage is still dumped here for treatment and separation. On the afternoon of April 1, the landfill did not record any burning. The waste separation system is still operating.
Striving to complete in April
A representative of Hai Phong Environmental Services Company Limited said that the unit started handling Kien Thiet landfill in November 2024, which is now 5 months. In addition to the remaining amount of about 10,000 m3, the daily waste treatment company of Kien Thiet commune is estimated at about 6 tons of waste/day.
For plastic waste and plastic bags, the company peels them off to transfer to another unit for use in collecting heat, and organics are expected to be buried. However, up to now, the unit has not used the burying method. The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hai Phong City has also just inspected to review and guide the unit on appropriate handling options to avoid causing environmental pollution.
Also according to the report from the waste treatment unit, currently, the amount of treated waste is about 2,000 m3. However, the unit is having difficulty accessing a large amount of garbage (about 2,000 m3) due to being entangled in a line of another unit. Therefore, the unit also recommended that the locality support to soon access and treat waste in line with the progress in April 2025.
Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Vu Ngoc Ngung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Thiet commune - said that the amount of waste remaining at Kien Thiet landfill has been basically treated. People have not reported the pollution and stench here for many months.
Environmental service company is also supporting the locality to handle daily waste arising daily (no charge). Currently, the People's Committee of Kien Thiet Commune is discussing with businesses, proceeding to sign waste treatment contracts in the coming time. At the same time, coordinate with supervising the treatment of outstanding waste of the enterprise, trying to complete in April in accordance with the district's direction.
