Unloading garbage while assessing pollution levels
According to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper at landfill No. 8, in Ba Lang ward, Cai Rang district, Can Tho city, machinery has been assembled and many workers are busy moving the amount of garbage overlapping with the Can Tho - Ca Mau highway.
Some workers are installing corrugated iron fences around the landfill, preventing strangers from entering the area and ensuring the safety of surrounding households.
This landfill has an area of 4.3 hectares with a total volume of over 162,000 tons of waste. The relocation of the landfill has been approved by the People's Committee of Cai Rang District in terms of design and budget with the area of the landfill to be relocated being 1.95 hectares; the cost is 13.08 billion VND; the implementation time is 45 days, starting from November 15.
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung - representative of the construction unit for the relocation of landfill No. 8 - said that in recent days, the unit has cleared over 90% of the landfill site. The machinery, workers and progress are all guaranteed, meeting each stage of the investor's handover.
“The unit is unloading the garbage while checking and re-evaluating the pollution level. Because the landfill has existed for decades, we will try to keep the environmental impact to a minimum,” said Mr. Tung.
Odor treatment, insect control
Regarding the environmental protection plan, Mr. Le Chi Hieu - expert of the Project Management Board and Land Fund Development of Cai Rang District - informed that for this landfill, when handling, it is necessary to dig 7 - 8m deep. During the digging and unloading process, bad odors will arise, so the unit has measures to treat bad odors, control insects with microbiological preparations and has a plan to collect sludge and leachate to ensure environmental hygiene.
The process of transferring waste is divided into 4 layers, digging each layer in turn and transporting waste to the landfill area. Waste is moved from the clearance area to the surrounding area within the existing landfill.
During the construction process, the unit arranged temporary roads and service roads; installed temporary fences around the landfill (corrugated iron fences with a total length of 975m) to protect the construction area.
The relocation of landfill No. 8 is divided into 2 phases. After the People's Committee of Cai Rang district carries out the relocation of the garbage volume overlapping the highway, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment will establish a project to relocate and handle the entire landfill No. 8.
According to the representative of My Thuan Project Management Board (investor of Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway project), up to now, the entire project site has been basically completed, only 200m in Can Tho due to the landfill, it is expected to be relocated and 100% of the site will be handed over before December 31.
The Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway Project is part of the North - South Eastern Expressway Project, with a total investment of more than VND 27,500 billion. The project started construction on January 1, 2023, is more than 110km long, passing through 5 provinces and cities: Can Tho, Hau Giang, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, Ca Mau.
