On January 11, informing Lao Dong reporters, Head of Mau Son Hydrometeorological Station (Lang Son) Hoang Quoc Huy said that in the past two days (January 10 and 11), the lowest temperature at Mau Son peak was only 2-3 degrees Celsius and is expected to continue to drop.
According to the Head of Mau Son Hydrometeorological Station, although the temperature is low, there is no frost here.
However, according to warnings from some hydrometeorological experts, frost and frost are still likely to occur in Phia Oac as well as high mountain peaks in the North such as Fansipan (Lao Cai), Dong Van, Lung Cu (Ha Giang), Mau Son (Lang Son) in the next 2 days because the temperature at night and in the morning is still below 3 degrees Celsius.
Mau Son is the highest mountain in Lang Son province, with an average altitude of 800-1,000 m above sea level.
The highest area of Mau Son mountain is 30 km east of Lang Son city center and about 180 km from Hanoi capital.
Due to the terrain structure with many bow-shaped mountain ranges opening up in the North, converging towards Tam Dao, Mau Son is the gateway to the monsoon in Vietnam.
According to statistics from Lang Son Hydrometeorological Station, in winter, Mau Son peak many times recorded temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius, accompanied by strong winds and ice, making it the harshest and coldest place in Vietnam.
In winter, the temperature in Mau Son drops to below zero, there is often frost, and occasional snowfall. The average temperature here is 15.5 degrees Celsius, and the mountain top is covered with clouds all year round.
When strong cold air flows in, causing widespread cold, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting often issues an additional 6am bulletin to inform about the temperature in some areas. In particular, Mau Son peak (Lang Son) is often recorded as the place with the lowest temperature in the country.
When the peak of Mau Son is covered in ice, many people flock here to see the ice and “hunt for snow”. Authorities recommend that people wear shoes with strong soles when traveling to the top of Mau Son. Drivers should pay attention to icy, slippery roads. In particular, due to low temperatures and high humidity, it is easy to get heat shock, so visitors coming here should pay attention to keeping their bodies warm.
