The above information is stated in the submission of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee sent to the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Party Committee on the list of large-scale projects and inauguration ceremonies to celebrate the 14th National Congress of the Party.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assessed the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro project as eligible to hold a groundbreaking ceremony on December 19, 2025.
The Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro is about 54 km long, starting in 23/9 Park, running along the park area parallel to Le Lai Street, then turning around at Nguyen Thai Hoc Street to follow the Ky Con axis and cross Ben Nghe Canal.
After crossing the canal, the route goes northeast to Hoang Dieu street, then changes direction to the Southeast axis in the Nguyen Tat Thanh - Doan Nhu Hai area.
From here, the metro runs straight through Nha Rong port area to near Tan Thuan 2 bridge, then enters Nguyen Van Linh direction, crosses Nguyen Thi Thap intersection to Tan My ward. The metro line crosses the Soai Rap River, running along Rung Sac Road to near the Can Gio Sea Urban Tourism Area.
The project passes through 8 communes and wards including: Ben Thanh, Xom Chieu, Tan Thuan, Tan My, Nha Be, Binh Khanh, An Thoi Dong and Can Gio (formerly in districts 1, 4, 7, Nha Be district and Can Gio district).
The route is built according to double track standards, 1,435 mm track gauge, maximum design speed of 350 km/h.
In phase 1, the line has two main stations, Ben Thanh and Can Gio; when demand increases, four stations Tan Thuan, Tan My, Nha Be and Binh Khanh will be added in phase 2. The depot and control center are located in Can Gio commune.
The total estimated investment is more than VND 85,650 billion, equivalent to USD 3.3 billion.
According to the plan, the construction and installation of equipment for the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro will last until the third quarter of 2027.
This metro line can be put into trial operation from the fourth quarter of 2027 and put into commercial operation in 2028.
Can Gio is about 50 km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, currently connecting mainly via Binh Khanh ferry. However, the ferry is overloaded, especially on weekends when the traffic has to wait for hours to cross the river.
To increase access to Can Gio, the high-speed train route from Bach Dang wharf to Binh Khanh commune has been restored.
Previously, Can Gio Urban Tourism Joint Stock Company sponsored three 200-ton ferries for Binh Khanh wharf, including fuel, labor and operation costs to reduce congestion while waiting for the construction of Can Gio bridge.
In addition to the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro line, many other key infrastructure projects are expected to create a boost in the development of the Can Gio area such as Can Gio bridge, the intersection of Rung Sac road with Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, Can Gio sea-crossing route, Can Gio sea-tourism urban area project.
When completed simultaneously, these projects will form a strong network of connections, creating a foundation for Can Gio to make a breakthrough in economy, tourism and urban areas.
