Opening the way for Gia Nghia city people to escape poverty

PHONG LAN |

Dak Nong – Many poor families in Gia Nghia city have been supported to develop their economy and improve their income through additional support for production breeds.

Support the poor

Gia Nghia City is a newly established young city. However, due to its characteristics, the lives of a small number of people still face many difficulties in finding jobs and improving their income.

In this context, Gia Nghia city's functional departments have integrated national target programs and mobilized benefactors to support people by providing breeds and livestock to help them increase production.

In Dak R'Moan commune, Mr. Ngo Van Tung's family was very excited to receive 3 breeding goats from the City Military Command and the City Women's Union.

Mr. Tung’s house is at the end of a red dirt road at the foot of the hill. After returning from the army in 1994, his family moved to Dak R’Moan commune to start a business, their life depending on 4 sao of old coffee trees.

Therefore, for a long time, his family was poor, near-poor... and has only escaped poverty for nearly a year now.

"After taking care of it, the mother goat gave birth to two kids. I sold them to a trader for 2.1 million VND/kid to earn more income, pay for medical treatment, and save some to buy fertilizer for the coffee plantation," said Mr. Tung.

According to Mr. Tung, the gifts from the benefactors are very meaningful to the farmers, like a "fishing rod" to give them more hope for the future.

To help Mr. Tung's family escape poverty, commune officials had previously gone to his house, encouraging the family to complete the paperwork and access preferential loans from the social policy bank of 100 million VND to rebuild the house.

Dak R'Moan Commune People's Committee also put his family on the list of calling for socialized capital for livestock breeding sources to connect with benefactors.

Escape poverty thanks to… 2 breeding cows

About 5km from Mr. Tung’s house is the house of Mr. Le Van Hung and his wife, Ms. Mai Thi Huong. In the past, Mr. Hung’s family of 6 people lived in an empty house, in extremely difficult circumstances.

The reason is that Mr. Hung's family has to work for hire, so the job is unstable, poverty and hardships keep following them. The money from selling coffee is not enough to pay for school fees and raise children of school age.

In 2022, the Dak R’Moan commune government made a list of this family in need of support and guidance to escape poverty. Afterwards, the benefactors brought 2 Sind crossbred cows to the village and gave them to the couple.

Mai Huyen Trang (16 years old), daughter of Mr. Hung and Ms. Huong, said: “Every day, when our parents go to work, we take turns going to the fields to cut grass to raise cows. Now the two breeding cows are at an adult age. Many people have come to buy them for tens of millions of dong. However, our parents do not sell them but keep them for breeding, multiplying the herd, and saving them as capital to raise our siblings for education in the future.”

According to Mr. Le Hung Manh - Vice Chairman of Dak R'Moan Commune People's Committee, Gia Nghia City, in addition to calling for and connecting with sponsors, the Commune People's Committee also assigned specialized staff in charge of breed sources and livestock to the villages to guide on how to care for and treat livestock.

“Healthy and well-reproducing livestock will help households earn more income and improve their living standards. Each unit and each professional officer will be responsible for helping poor farmers change their lives for the better,” Mr. Manh shared.
