According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, from the night of October 20 to October 21, the amount of rain falling on Hue City was quite large but scattered, especially on the night of October 20, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Hoang Lanh Street (Hue City) with a length of nearly 1km was always in the situation of "flooding before rain".
Although not too long, Hoang Lanh Street is an important artery of Hue city. This road connects the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Public Administration Center and the provincial Social Insurance. In particular, there are many apartment buildings around, where people are densely populated.
On October 21, the People's Committee of Phu Thuan commune (Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province) said that due to the impact of heavy rain, strong waves eating deep into the shore caused serious erosion at Phu Thuan beach area.
According to the leader of Phu Thuan Commune People's Committee, through monitoring in this area from June to September 2024, the water level penetrated into the mainland about 70m with a length of about 300m.
Recorded on October 21, strong waves caused serious landslides, going about 50m inland, in some places about 100m deep. At the location 100m deep, the waves damaged the sidewalk of the internal crossroad of the beach, causing the poplar trees on the sidewalk to be at risk of falling.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Dan - Chairman of Phu Thuan Commune People's Committee - informed that in recent years, with many different sources of capital, Phu Thuan Commune has invested in building more than 2.47km of sea embankment (shore embankment) and 0.55km of underground embankment with a total cost of about 400 billion VND, while 1.9km has not been invested and continues to erode during the rainy and stormy season.
Investing in the embankment to cope with landslides, creating a shield to protect the Northeast of Hue City, also helps the locality stabilize the population, develop production, especially tourism services, and ensure national security and defense of the coastal border commune.
The Hydrometeorological Station of Thua Thien Hue province forecasts that the impact of heavy rains may cause flash floods, landslides, and rock slides in mountainous areas. People should be on guard against localized heavy rains in a short period of time that could cause flooding in urban areas and areas with poor drainage systems.
