Ho Chi Minh City dredged and renovated Ba Lon and Ong Be canals with a total capital of more than VND17,000 billion, contributing to reducing flooding and environmental pollution in the South.

On the morning of November 14, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council approved the investment policy for two projects to dredge and improve the environment of Ong Be canal and Ba Lon canal.

The dredging and environmental improvement project combined with urban renovation of the Ba Lon canal drainage axis (through Binh Dong ward and Binh Hung commune) has a total investment of more than VND 9,200 billion.

Of which, compensation, support and resettlement costs account for VND6,682 billion, while construction costs are about VND2,000 billion.

Ba Lon Canal is about 7.4 km long, starting from Kenh Doi Canal (Binh Dong Ward) to Ba Lao Canal (Binh Hung Commune).

The project will dredge the entire route, build a 9.9 km long embankment, reopen the route according to the planning of 12 - 18 m wide; build Ba Lon 2 bridge (40 m wide, 58 m long) over National Highway 50 with a synchronous technical infrastructure system including sidewalks, trees, lighting, drainage and wharves.

The project will be implemented in the period of 2026 - 2029, completed and put into use in 2030.

When completed, the project will improve drainage capacity for the basin by about 920 hectares, reduce flooding, prevent landslides, improve the water environment and contribute to the urban beautification of the South of Ho Chi Minh City.

The dredging and environmental improvement project combined with urban renovation of the drainage axis of Ong Be canal (Chanh Hung ward and Binh Hung commune) has a total investment of more than VND 7,785 billion.

The project includes the following main items: Dredging Ong Be canal, 4.2 km long; building a 4.5 km long bank protection embankment; building a new route according to the plan, 12 - 16 m wide, more than 2.4 km long; along with a system of sidewalks, railings, drainage, wharves, trees and lighting.

The project aims to enhance drainage capacity, reduce flooding for an area of 470 hectares, while improving the environment, beautifying urban areas along canals, creating ecological space and momentum for socio-economic development in the South of Ho Chi Minh City. The project will also be implemented in the 2026 - 2029 period, completed and put into use in 2030.
