People who run red lights in Ho Chi Minh City are surprised by the new fine

HCMC - According to records, the number of people violating the Road Traffic Law has decreased significantly, some were surprised by the new fines according to Decree 168.

From today (January 1, 2025), Decree 168/2024/ND-CP regulating administrative sanctions for violations of traffic order and safety in the field of road traffic; deduction of points, restoration of driving license points, officially took effect, changing many levels of sanctions for traffic violations compared to before.

According to Lao Dong, on January 1, 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City, traffic in areas across the city was quite favorable. In the morning, there was no traffic jam on roads such as Hoang Van Thu, Cong Hoa, Cach Mang Thang Tam, etc. The situation of people driving on sidewalks, running red lights, encroaching on lanes, etc. decreased significantly.

Mr. Hoang Van Tuan (Tan Binh District) said that because today is the New Year holiday, there are few people on the streets, making the traffic situation much "easier" than usual.

Mr. Tuan also said that the new penalty regulations officially taking effect are also part of the reason why people's traffic awareness has improved.

"The new fine is very high, if you drive carelessly you can lose a month's salary," said Mr. Tuan.

Meanwhile, some other traffic participants said they did not know about the increased fine.

For example, Mr. L.N.T (born in 2002) was driving a motorbike but did not comply with the traffic light signal at Hang Xanh intersection (Binh Thanh district) and was discovered by the traffic police and fined on the morning of January 1, 2025.

When the traffic police informed him of the new administrative fine, Mr. T was surprised, because he had not known about it before. Accordingly, for this violation, Mr. T will be fined from 4-6 million VND (previously from 800,000 VND to 1 million VND) and have points deducted from his driving license.

"From now on, I will be more careful and not dare to violate the Traffic Law anymore. If I get fined once, I will lose half a month's salary," Mr. T shared.

Another case is Mr. L.T.K (born in 1996) driving a motorbike in the wrong direction in this area and was discovered by the traffic police. Mr. K said that he was traveling from Binh Duong to Ho Chi Minh City and did not know the way so he drove in the wrong direction.

According to regulations, for this violation, Mr. K will be fined from 4-6 million VND (previously 1-2 million VND) and have his driving license points deducted.

When the traffic police informed him of the fine, Mr. K was surprised and thought that the new fine was a bit harsh, but he completely agreed with the new decree and said he would be more careful when participating in traffic in the future.
