Born and raised on Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang), in 1978 Mr. Danh Phu joined the Phu Quoc District Police. After being discharged from the army in 1983, he returned to work in the sea profession with his parents and actively participated in local union activities. Each year, he mobilizes and voluntarily contributes nearly 500 million VND to support poor households to go offshore and stick to the sea.
As the Head of the Safety Ship Team, the Solidarity Group at Sea, and a member of the Coast Guard, Mr. Phu has effectively promoted his role in disseminating and disseminating laws at sea. Actively working with the government and organizations, the Border Guard has been promoting against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Mr. Vo Ngoc Thu, who is nearly 80 years old this year and has more than 50 years of sea work in Hon Dat commune, An Giang province, is also a typical example in the fight against IUU fishing. Mr. Thu is one of the ship owners who actively took the lead in the movements launched by the locality and Linh Huynh Border Guard Station. With knowledge of the law, he actively participates in propaganda activities against IUU fishing.
Mr. Bui Tan Luong (55 years old) is from Dong Thap province but came to Phu Quoc to work as a hired fisherman for fishing vessels more than 20 years ago. With his diligence, gentleness, and good sea travel skills, he is loved by everyone. Mr. Luong is attached to the sea profession, gets married, gives birth, establishes a business on the island and considers Phu Quoc his second hometown.
Originally from a long-time sea traveler, Mr. Luong understands the Southwest sea area well. In his fishing logistics work, he often meets fishing vessels offshore. Therefore, whenever there is a need to disseminate the law to fishermen, boat owners, fishermen... working at sea, the forces come to ask him to take the time to approach boats and ships to invite people to attend meetings.
Mr. Luong and the authorities have stepped up propaganda activities against IUU fishing. He also donated tens of millions of VND to the Border Guard to print documents, leaflets, flyers... to propagate against IUU fishing.
Lieutenant Colonel Danh Tam - Political Commissar of the Border Guard Command of Duong Dong Port - said: In the work of preventing and combating IUU fishing in recent times, there have been positive and outstanding fishermen. They contribute their efforts, money, means, and voice, together with the Border Guard and authorities, to promote propaganda activities, contributing greatly to preventing our fishing vessels from violating IUU.
