On March 21, the People's Committee of Ninh Thuan province said that it had sent a document to the National Assembly Committee of the Vietnam Human and Biosphere Program (MAB) to consult on the implementation of the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power project within the scope of the Nui Chua World Biosphere Reserve.
According to the review results, the area for the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power project is 1,361 hectares within the scope of the Nui Chua World Biosphere Reserve, of which 49.25 hectares are in the core area and 1,311 hectares are in the buffer zone.
The World Biosphere Reserve of Jesus Mountain, recognized by UNESCO in 2021, has a total area of 106,646 hectares, including the core area, buffer zone and transition zone.
The People's Committee of Ninh Thuan province requests that MAB Vietnam have recommendations and instructions related to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, adjustment of boundaries of biosphere reserve zones, and related international provisions.
At the same time, the province also proposed guidance on converting forest and forest land use purposes to implement the project in accordance with Vietnamese law and international commitments.
This is to speed up the progress of site clearance, migration, and resettlement, as a basis for implementing the next steps of the project, while ensuring regulations on environmental protection and sustainable development in the project area.
