Phu Quoc transfers more than 6 hectares of forest to expand roads and build connecting branches

Kien Giang - The project aims to develop a transport system that ensures connectivity and synchronization, improves transport capacity and traffic safety on Phu Quoc Island.

On September 30, the People's Council of Kien Giang province, term X, held the 26th Session (Special Session) to approve a number of important issues on public investment and project implementation.

At the meeting, the draft Resolution "Decision on the policy of changing the purpose of forest use to other purposes to implement the project of upgrading and expanding Duong Dong - Cua Can - Ganh Dau road and building a new branch connecting to the South - North axis road, Phu Quoc city" was approved.

The project will transfer about 6.34 hectares of protective forest land managed by Phu Quoc National Park for implementation.

According to the Report of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee, this project aims to develop a transport system that ensures connectivity and synchronization, improves transport capacity, and increases traffic safety on Phu Quoc Island. Thereby creating conditions for the development of tourist areas, services, and tourism projects on Phu Quoc Island, contributing to socio-economic development, meeting the requirements of sustainable development, regional and international economic integration, and ensuring national defense and security. The location of the forest belongs to sub-zone 75, Phu Quoc protective forest in Cua Duong commune.

The proposed location for changing the purpose of forest use to another purpose to implement the project must comply with the principles of changing the purpose of forest use to another purpose according to regulations.

Through the review of the draft, this is an urgent project on the construction of essential economic and social infrastructure. The project implementation location is not in the strictly protected zone of the special-use forest and has been adjusted out of the forestry land planning according to the results of the review of 3 types of forests in Kien Giang province.

On the other hand, the area of natural forest affected is small and the conversion of forest use to other purposes at the above location is consistent with the province's forestry planning and does not affect the forest land area allocation target.
