Underwater cable incident causes widespread power outage in Phu Quoc

NGUYÊN ANH |

An Giang - Due to the incident of a 110 kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc underground cable over the sea supplying power to the 110 kV Phu Quoc transformer station, there was a widespread power outage.

On November 30, An Giang Power Company said that it had reported to the People's Committee of An Giang province about the incident causing a widespread power outage in Phu Quoc special zone on November 29, 2025.

According to the Provincial Electricity, at 1:45 p.m. on November 29, an incident occurred with a 110 kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc underground cable over the sea to supply power to the 110 kV Phu Quoc transformer station. The incident caused a widespread power outage including the areas of Duong Dong, Cua Can, Cua Duong, Ham Ninh and the entire Northern region of the island.

Through the inspection process, An Giang Power Company recorded that Thuan Thanh KG Construction Design Consulting Co., Ltd. is constructing a gable railing about 300 meters from Ha Tien coast in the safety corridor of the 110kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc underground cable car route. According to initial assessment, the forced strengthening of the steel piles on the taxiway was the cause of the 110kV underground cable supplying electricity to Phu Quoc.

Due to the incident, An Giang Power Company was forced to isolate underground cables for inspection, and it is expected that the time for inspection and troubleshooting the incident may last long depending on the level of damage and the handling plan.

According to the People's Committee of Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang Power Company is still trying to fix the power outage on the island. About 30,000 households were affected by the power outage of the 110KV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc underground cable line.

It is known that Phu Quoc Special Zone is supplied with electricity from two sources: the 110kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc underground cable line and the 220kV Kien Binh - Phu Quoc line, these two sources have not been connected to the Circular, so when the above incident occurred, it caused widespread power outages.

To overcome this situation, improve reliability, and connect two power sources for the special area, Southern Power Corporation has deployed the 110kV Phu Quoc - Bac Phu Quoc Line, 110kV Phu Quoc - Nam Phu Quoc Line, and 220kV Phu Quoc substation.

However, in the past, these projects have encountered many difficulties in compensation and site clearance, leading to a prolonged construction progress and the power cannot be connected to the project as planned.

Currently, to restore power supply to the maximum capacity for the people, the Company has carried out operations to transfer part of the load from the 110kV Phu Quoc transformer station to receiving power from the 110kV Nam Phu Quoc transformer station via the 22kV line, while mobilizing businesses and customers with a reserve source to operate generators to use, reducing the pressure of power cables in the current situation. However, due to the large load in the area and the long power supply radius (more than 40km), many areas of Cua Duong, Cua Can, Bac Dao... continue to have power outages.

An Giang Power Company has contacted the relevant unit to fix this problem.
