Ho Chi Minh City removes roundabout traffic at Dien Bien Phu roundabout

Ho Chi Minh City - Dien Bien Phu roundabout maintains the current status but stops organizing traffic in the form of a roundabout, and at the same time installs traffic lights to regulate traffic flow.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just sent a document to the City Police, Tan Dinh Ward People's Committee, Urban Traffic Management and Operation Center and Traffic Management and Technical Infrastructure Center on adjusting traffic organization in the Dien Bien Phu - Nguyen Binh Khiem roundabout area.

According to the agreed plan, Ho Chi Minh City will maintain the current status of Dien Bien Phu roundabout but will not continue to organize traffic in the form of a roundabout as it is now.

Functional sectors will install medians connecting from the median strip of Dien Bien Phu street to the roundabout on Dinh Tien Hoang street to prevent traffic from following the roundabout from Dien Bien Phu bridge turning left into Nguyen Binh Khiem street.

At the same time, another median strip will also be installed from Dien Bien Phu bridge to the roundabout to create a separate lane for vehicles turning left from Dien Bien Phu street to Nguyen Binh Khiem street.

According to the new plan, vehicles traveling on Nguyen Binh Khiem street when reaching the roundabout are required to turn right to enter Dien Bien Phu bridge or the road on the side of the bridge, and are not allowed to enter the left turn branch from Dien Bien Phu street to Nguyen Binh Khiem.

In addition, functional agencies will install 2 green - yellow - red traffic light poles operating under a 2-phase program.

In which, phase 1 is for vehicles from Dien Bien Phu bridge turning left into Nguyen Binh Khiem street; phase 2 is for vehicles on Dien Bien Phu street going straight to Dien Bien Phu bridge.

The pilot time for the traffic adjustment plan is expected from May 23 to June 23, 2026.

The Department of Construction assigned the Traffic Management and Technical Infrastructure Center to urgently deploy traffic organization plans, fully install road sign systems and remote guide banners before piloting.

This unit is also responsible for regularly monitoring the traffic situation in the area to study and propose appropriate adjustments to ensure traffic safety and limit congestion.

In case the traffic situation becomes complicated or congestion arises, relevant units must coordinate to research and propose timely handling solutions.

The Urban Traffic Management and Operation Center is assigned to coordinate the installation of traffic light systems and monitor actual traffic flow to adjust the appropriate light duration.

The Department of Construction also requested the City Police and Tan Dinh Ward People's Committee to strengthen forces to coordinate guidance and traffic regulation, especially during peak hours.

Dien Bien Phu - Nguyen Binh Khiem roundabout (Tan Dinh ward) is one of the important traffic junctions connecting the eastern gateway with the central area of Ho Chi Minh City.

The project was built more than 20 years ago, with a diameter of about 60 m, surrounded by many green trees. In the center of the roundabout is a 4-sided clock tower about 16 m high - a familiar image of this area for many years.

Currently, the intersection has not installed traffic lights but organizes traffic in a roundabout form, allowing vehicles to turn around and move into surrounding roads.

However, along with the rapid increase in vehicles over the years, the Dien Bien Phu - Nguyen Binh Khiem roundabout area often falls into a state of overload, especially during peak hours.
