HCMC - The Van Thanh Canal renovation project (Binh Thanh District) with a total capital of VND 8,614 billion will affect 1,065 households, of which 772 households must be cleared.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has just submitted to the City Appraisal Council (the Department of Finance is the standing agency) a pre-feasibility study report for the Van Thanh canal dredging, environmental improvement and infrastructure construction project.

The project will renovate the entire main route of Van Thanh canal, about 2km long (from Vo Oanh street to Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal) along with a 275m long branch of canal.

The project includes the construction of a solid concrete embankment on both sides of Van Thanh canal and the branch line; dredging the canal bed to a width of 25 - 50m, 3m deep; at the same time, building a traffic road along the canal with a width of 6 - 20m.

In addition, the project will build a new Phu An bridge 17m wide, upgrade and expand Ngo Tat To street (from Phu An bridge to Phu My street) to 25m.

A parallel road connecting to Dien Bien Phu Street will also be formed to increase traffic capacity in the area.

The project also invests in building a system of drainage culverts along the domestic water, a rainwater drainage system, a sewer to collect wastewater, along with parks and green areas along the canal with a total area of about 4.2 hectares.

The total land area to be recovered for the project is more than 7.47ha. There are about 1,065 affected cases, of which 772 households will be completely cleared.

The project has a total estimated investment capital of VND 8,614 billion, of which the cost of compensation, support and resettlement alone accounts for about VND 6,870 billion. The remaining part includes construction costs (VND 1,326 billion) and project management, investment consulting, and reserve costs.

The project implementation plan is divided into two phases. In the 2025 - 2026 period, VND 6,887 billion needs to be allocated to support project establishment and site clearance.

In the 2026 - 2030 period, about 1,727 billion VND is needed to complete the construction of items and finalize the project.

Van Thanh Canal is located right under Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) and only about 1km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, one of the important drainage canals for Binh Thanh District and the city. This is also a large branch in the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal basin (along with Xuyen Tam canal).

However, over the years, encroachment, silting and serious pollution have gradually turned Van Thanh canal into an environmental black spot.

Therefore, the renovation, dredging and embellishment of Van Thanh canal is considered very urgent, especially in the context that the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal basin environmental sanitation project has been basically completed, bringing a spacious and clean appearance to the area.

When completed, the project will help clear the flow, improve water quality, eliminate polluted ponds and lakes - where pathogens are concentrated and collect wastewater to the Ho Chi Minh City centralized treatment plant. Thereby, contributing to improving the quality of the living environment for people in the area.

Not only an environmental project, the formation of the Van Thanh canal road will connect with key traffic axes such as Dien Bien Phu, Ngo Tat To, Nguyen Huu Canh, Vo Oanh..., creating a comprehensive traffic network, helping to increase regional connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in Binh Thanh district.
