Ho Chi Minh City supports the adjustment of the starting point of the Can Gio Metro line from Tan Thuan station to Ben Thanh station; the section from Ben Thanh to Tan Thuan will be underground.

The Office of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just announced the conclusion of the Chairman of the City People's Committee at the meeting of the Special Working Group to review and remove difficulties for projects in the area, related to the recommendation of Vingroup Corporation.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee supports the proposal of Vinspeed High-speed Railway Investment and Development Joint Stock Company (under Vingroup) to adjust the starting point of the Can Gio Metro line from Tan Thuan Station to Ben Thanh Station.

The adjustment aims to increase exploitation efficiency, expand service coverage and better connect the economic - administrative center with residential areas and commercial centers.

The city also proposed that Vingroup study the development of underground space combined with public space in Ben Thanh market area according to the general plan, contributing to improving urban aesthetics, promoting tourism and improving traffic in the central area.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assigned Vinspeed Company to coordinate with relevant departments and branches to continue researching the route, ensuring feasibility, optimizing exploitation capabilities and enhancing connectivity. At the same time, urgently complete the dossier to submit to the Appraisal Council for approval of the investment policy and investor of the metro line connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City - Can Gio.

Previously, in a document sent to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the Department of Finance, Vinspeed said that the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Gio central metro line initially had a starting point in Tan Thuan ward (formerly District 7) and an ending point in Can Gio commune (formerly Can Gio district).

However, after practical research and receiving opinions from specialized agencies, Vinspeed realized that the launch of the route in Tan Thuan will face some difficulties in connection.

Therefore, Vinspeed proposed to move the starting point of the route to the area in front of Ben Thanh market, which can be directly connected to Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien).

Notably, the section from Ben Thanh to Tan Thuan will be underground to reduce compensation, support and resettlement costs.

The remaining area from Tan Thuan to Can Gio will continue to be implemented according to the previously proposed elevated travel plan.

Vinspeed assessed that this adjustment will help increase connectivity and connectivity between the Can Gio Metro Line and other metro lines, creating a modern, seamless transportation network, thereby improving the efficiency of exploitation and investment value for the entire metro system of the city.

According to the investor's plan, if Ho Chi Minh City approves the investment policy, the Metro project connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City - Can Gio can start construction at the end of this year or the beginning of 2026, and be completed in 2028.

According to the original plan, the metro line connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City - Can Gio is 48.5 km long, the entire route is elevated, starting at Nguyen Van Linh Street (the section between the intersection of Nguyen Thi Thap and Ly Phuc Man streets, Tan Thuan Ward) and ending near the Can Gio coastal urban tourism area.

The route is designed with a double track, 1,435 mm track, maximum speed up to 350 km/h - more than three times the speed of the current Metro Line No. 1 (110 km/h). On the route, there are two main stations, Tan Thuan and Can Gio, and a 39-hectare depot located near the coastal urban tourism area.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has established a Council for appraisal of the proposal for approval of the investment policy and investor for the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Gio central metro project.
