The 9.3km-long National Highway 1 upgrade project (from Kinh Duong Vuong Street to the border of Long An province) will be implemented under the BOT (build-operate-transfer) model.
According to the proposal of the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City, the route is divided into three main sections:
The section from the end of An Lac intersection to the end of Tan Kien intersection (1.5 km) will be renovated and expanded to 60m, meeting 12 lanes.
The section from the end of Tan Kien intersection to Ring Road 3 intersection (7 km) also has the road surface expanded to 60m with 12 lanes.
The section from the Ring Road 3 intersection to the Long An provincial border (0.8 km) is designed to be 60m wide, serving 10 lanes.

The project also builds an overpass at the Doan Nguyen Tuan intersection, adds branches to the Binh Dien and Binh Thuan bridges, and renovates the An Lac intersection to increase traffic capacity.

According to the plan, the land area to be recovered mainly belongs to Binh Chanh district (34.4 hectares) and Binh Tan district (1.59 hectares).
In Binh Chanh district, 1,036 households will be affected, of which 483 households will have their land completely cleared and 553 households will have part of their land recovered. Most of the land recovered here is residential land (11.1 ha) and land for perennial crops (22.7 ha).
In Binh Tan district, 82 households had their land recovered, including 59 households that were cleared. The total area of residential land to be recovered is 0.97 hectares, along with 0.62 hectares of land for perennial crops.
Compensation, support and resettlement costs for households account for more than VND11,000 billion out of the total investment capital of VND15,897 billion.
The project is expected to start in 2025 and be completed in 2028.

When put into use, National Highway 1 through Binh Chanh and Binh Tan districts will have a scale of 10 - 12 lanes, contributing to reducing traffic congestion at the western gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, improving traffic safety and optimizing the efficiency of major infrastructure projects such as the North - South Expressway, Ring Roads 2, 3 and 4.
The expansion of National Highway 1 not only solves the current traffic problem but also creates a lever to promote regional socio-economic development, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta provinces more effectively.
