Abandoned plant seedling farm costs billions of VND in poor Bac Kan province

Bac Kan - Cao Ky Plant Seedling Farm (Cao Ky Commune, Cho Moi District) has been abandoned for many years due to ineffective operations.

Cao Ky Seedling Farm (Cho Moi District) is part of the project to produce seedless orange, tangerine and persimmon varieties in Bac Kan Province in the period 2011-2015. Implemented since 2011, the project has a total investment of nearly 14 billion VND.

Located next to National Highway 3 with an area of over 9,000m2, Cao Ky tree nursery has the capacity to design 1.3 million seedlings of all kinds/year.

In 2017, Bac Kan province handed over the nursery to the provincial Agricultural Extension Center for management, however, it operated for a short time and then was abandoned. After that, Cao Ky farm was "borrowed" by a private unit to produce seedlings but was again abandoned.

Once expected to meet the people's need for seedlings, after a period of ineffective operation, Cao Ky farm fell into disrepair.

According to the reporter, on October 20, many items at Cao Ky seed farm have seriously degraded. Inside the greenhouses and warehouses are dirty and covered with weeds. After a long time of exposure to the sun and rain, the greenhouse systems have been abandoned and rusted. The potting sheds and plant growing tanks are covered with moss, with only a few vegetables grown by the people.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoat (residing in Cao Ky commune, Cho Moi district) said: "The seedling farm is located right on the national highway, very convenient for transporting seedlings. However, after operating for a while, it was abandoned.

Large areas, large investments but left abandoned is a waste, especially greenhouses and nurseries that are not operating and gradually deteriorate. We need to have a solution soon to avoid waste."

On October 21, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Dong Phuc Toan - Chairman of Cao Ky Commune People's Committee confirmed that Cao Ky seed farm is still abandoned. Currently, the seed farm has been handed over to Cho Moi district for management.

"After a period of ineffective operation, Cao Ky breeding farm was abandoned. After being handed over to the district for management, there is a plan to move the local secondary school to this area.

The implementation time must wait for a specific construction plan and budget before implementation," the leader added.
