On December 10, the People's Court of Kien Giang province opened a first-instance trial of a criminal case, sentencing defendant Nguyen Van Kich (born 1964, residing in Giong Rieng district, Kien Giang province) to 4 years in prison for murder.
According to the indictment, Nguyen Van Kich cultivated a rice field next to his house in Hoa Hung commune, Giong Rieng district. On the morning of April 7, 2024, Kich inspected the rice field and discovered that there were many rats biting and destroying it, so he came up with the idea of using a wire connected to the household electricity source to trap the rats.
That same afternoon, Kich took the coil of wire and bamboo stakes that he had prepared earlier and dragged them around the rice field. Then he used one end of the wire that he had strung up and connected it to the electrical switch in the house to create a trap to catch mice.
At around 10pm the same day, V.C.V.L drove a motorbike carrying V.C.H.N. When driving to Kich's field, due to the small road and being drunk, he lost control of the vehicle and fell into the power lines that Kich had snagged. As a result, L was electrocuted and died. Kich then went to the police to surrender.
