As reported by Lao Dong, on the afternoon of November 6, during the construction process, the bridge connecting Lung Cang and Lung Buong villages (Thuan Hoa commune, Vi Xuyen district) collapsed. The new bridge under construction is 44 meters long and 3.5 meters wide. At the time of the incident, it was not raining, the stream water was low, the project had completed two pillars, and was building a suspension span across the stream.
Previously, the flood in mid-June 2024 caused the old Lung Cang bridge to collapse, isolating nearly 80 households. The locality called on benefactors to support the construction of a new bridge.
On July 7, the new Lung Cang bridge with reinforced concrete structure and a load capacity of 10 tons was started, with a construction cost of about 3 billion VND, of which the Next - G Fund for Hanoi's future and philanthropists supported 2 billion VND, and Vi Xuyen district contributed 1 billion VND.
Looking forward to connecting the two shores
Mr. Ly Thanh Qua (Lung Cang village) said that this is the only bridge connecting the two villages. Hundreds of households are looking forward to the construction of the bridge. The bridge collapse has made people worried, not knowing when it will be completed.
"Previously, this area had a suspension bridge across the stream. The bridge was precarious and makeshift, making it difficult to travel. In June, when there was a big flood, the bridge was washed away. At that time, people had to wade through the stream and row rafts to get to the other side.
When the new bridge was built, people were very happy. They wished to have a solid bridge so they could travel safely, without having to worry, especially during the rainy season," said Mr. Qua.
According to Mr. Qua, after the new bridge under construction collapsed, the local people were very sad. We hope that the bridge will continue to be built and completed soon to connect the two villages. With a solid and sturdy bridge, people's lives will be stable and safe.
According to Mr. Chang Van To (Head of Lung Buong village, Thuan Hoa commune), when the old suspension bridge was swept away, 20 households in Lung Buong village and 60 households in Lung Cang village were affected.
"The first week, 80 households were completely isolated. After that, the local authorities built a temporary suspension bridge using bamboo and plastic pipes. The time when there was no bridge was during the rainy season, so it was very dangerous. People were always in a state of fear.
When there was a new bridge project, people were very excited, waiting every day for a solid, sturdy bridge to cross. On November 6, the bridge under construction collapsed, so everyone was very worried," said Mr. To.
Keep up the hope
According to Mr. To, the lives of local people were already difficult. After the bridge under construction collapsed, people had to wade across streams and follow temporary bridges to get around.
"Dry season is less difficult and dangerous, but during flood season, traveling is very difficult. There is a temporary suspension bridge that can only be crossed on foot, but vehicles cannot cross, and rafting is not safe.
Now I just hope to continue building the bridge connecting the two villages and complete it soon. People have been waiting for this bridge for so many years," Mr. To confided.
On November 9, speaking with Lao Dong, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chiem - Chairwoman of Thuan Hoa Commune People's Committee said that the new bridge project is under construction, the commune is the beneficiary. All procedures are proactively managed by the volunteer side.
"This is an unexpected incident. After the incident, the volunteer unit also announced that they would fix it and soon complete the bridge for people to travel; there is a plan to redesign it to ensure safety.
The local authorities also hope that the bridge will be rebuilt soon. The cause of the bridge collapse is still being verified and clarified," the leader added.
