On June 9, the 11th Vinh Long Provincial People's Council, term 2026 - 2031, passed a Resolution approving the policy of establishing 16 new wards in the province. The establishment of wards does not change the natural area, population and number of commune-level administrative units.
According to the resolution, 15 wards are established on the basis of maintaining the current status of area, population and names of existing communes including: Tra On, Long Ho, Tan Quoi, Tam Binh, Mo Cay, Binh Dai, Phu Tuc, Tien Thuy, Tan Thuy, Cang Long, Ba Tri, Tieu Can, Hung Hoa, Tan Hoa and Tap Ngai.
Trung Thanh commune, when converted to a ward administrative unit, will have a new name, Vung Liem ward. After completing the establishment, Vinh Long province will have 35 wards and 89 communes, with a total of 124 commune-level administrative units as at present.

According to Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee, through reviewing and comparing current regulations, all 16 communes planned to establish wards fully meet the standards of population size, natural area, location and function in planning, urbanization level and socio-economic development level.
The results of voter opinion collection in localities also recorded high consensus, with a unified rate from 91% to 100%. People also proposed that the government pay attention to upgrading traffic infrastructure, improving the quality of administrative procedure resolution, strengthening social security and handling environmental issues.
After merging with Tra Vinh and Ben Tre provinces, Vinh Long province has a new natural area of more than 6,296km2, with a population of over 4.2 million people. The provincial administrative center is located in Long Chau ward, belonging to the former Vinh Long city.
