In fact, battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) are famous for not emitting gas, but their production and processing processes are often scrutinized. However, new research from the International Council for Clean Transport (ICCT) shows that BEVs outperform in their life cycle emissions, especially when charged with renewable energy, significantly lower than all other transmission systems.
For 2024 models in the US, self-charging hybrid cars with greenhouse gas emissions are 2.2 times (sedans) and 2.5 times (SUVs) more than BEVs, respectively. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) also have double emissions. Gasoline SUVs even emit 3.5 times more BEVs.
The above figures are based on charging from the normal grid. If BEVs are fully charged with renewable electricity, hybrid SUVs will emissions more than 4.9 times, and gasoline SUVs will be more terrible with 6.7 times greenhouse gas emissions.
ICCT has estimated the net greenhouse gas emissions during the vehicle's life cycle, including emissions from the production of batteries, vehicles, fuel, final use and treatment. This is a comprehensive measure that clearly shows the environmental impact of a vehicle.
It is known that in the process of promoting hybrid cars, among the most enthusiastic "big guys" participating is Toyota. Nikkei Asia reported that Toyota will turn all major US models into hybrid vehicles by 2030, strengthening its leading position in this segment.
Mr. Kevin Butt - Regional Director at Toyota Motor North America said that the company's plan is to provide hybrid options for all key models by 2030. Many important Toyota models are available with hybrid versions.
For example, the popular Camry sedan has now switched to a full hybrid after being upgraded in early 2024. Or the Crown Signia multi-purpose sports car launched this year will also only have a hybrid version.
In addition, in the first half of 2024, Toyota achieved an overall hybrid vehicle sales increase of 66% in the US with 410,000 vehicles. Hybrid cars account for 40% of Toyota's total North American sales from January to May, up 6 percentage points compared to 2023.
However, ICCT has predicted that BEV's environmental benefits will be greater by 2030. Specifically, the 2030 gasoline SUV is estimated to have 7.5 times more greenhouse gas emissions than the BEV equivalent to run on renewable energy. Their latest research shows that the emission reduction potential of PHEV and HEV is far behind BEV.
However, in the Vietnamese market, by the end of June this year, Toyota had sold a total of more than 10,000 hybrid cars after 4 years of presence. Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus account for nearly 60% of the hybrid car market share in the US.
