Hold for 2 - 3 months
At Can Tho Central General Hospital, the Ministry of Health's end-of-line hospital in the Mekong Delta region, on average, 700 - 800 units of blood are needed per week. However, in the past 3 months, the Hospital has encountered difficulties in emergency and treatment due to a sharp decrease in blood supply from the Hematology - Blood Transfusion Hospital of Can Tho City. Up to this point, the Hospital has only been provided with about 10 - 20% of the actual demand.

Informing reporters, Specialist Doctor II Le Hoang Phuc, Head of the General Planning Department of the Hospital, said that in the face of the above reality, the hospital has proactively implemented many solutions at the same time. In particular, the unit has contacted the Ho Chi Minh City Hematology - Blood Transfusion Hospital to request a significant amount of blood for emergency care and treatment.
The leaders of Can Tho Central General Hospital also based on professional requirements, notified departments and rooms that require the use of blood economically, according to regulations, and prioritized emergency cases. Some cases will have to be temporarily delayed so that when the blood supply is stable, it can be done.

"We are still able to ensure emergency care, and some cases of mid-level treatment can also be approved for surgery. However, in the next 2 - 3 months, if blood volume does not improve, it will affect health care for people. Because patients who need surgery cannot wait in the market for a long time due to anemia, it can only last for 15 - 20 days" - Dr. Phuc said.
Previously, the Hospital also mobilized about 200 units of blood from medical staff, civil servants, hospital workers as well as all students, trainees, and patients' relatives. Thereby contributing to improving blood quantity at Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital.
Continue to call
On the side of Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, which supplies blood to 76 medical facilities in the Mekong Delta region, currently needs to provide about 500 units of blood per day, equivalent to 3,500 - 4,000 units/week.
In August, the demand for blood in the Mekong Delta region was about 14,000 units. Meanwhile, the current blood donation registration schedule is only about 5,000 units, not meeting 50% of the needs of medical facilities to serve the treatment of patients.

The hospital's Board of Directors said that, as the unit responsible for receiving and supplying blood products, it is truly heartbreaking and sympathetic to see colleagues from hospitals not afraid to travel far, regardless of day or night, always ready to go to the hospital to receive each unit of blood when there is an emergency.
To prevent blood supply from being interrupted, the Hospital urgently calls for the cooperation of the community, and is in great need of new hearts and more people willing to share precious drops of blood.

In recent times, Departments, agencies, departments, unions, associations, clubs... in Can Tho City have also actively called for and organized many blood donation points. Most recently, on August 4, the People's Committee of Can Tho City also issued an official dispatch on strengthening propaganda, mobilization and organization of voluntary blood donation in the area.
The Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City assigned the Chairman of the Red Cross Society of the City, Chairmen of the People's Committees of communes and wards, based on their assigned functions and tasks, to coordinate with relevant agencies and units to promote propaganda, mobilization and organization of voluntary blood donation activities in accordance with local conditions, contributing to ensuring blood supply for emergency care and treatment of patients.
