An Giang province plans to plan and invest in 2 thermal power plant projects, including An Giang 1 Thermal Power Plant and Nui To 1 Thermal Power Plant.

On the afternoon of December 8, a working group of An Giang Provincial People's Committee led by Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung came to conduct a field survey at Hau Giang Biomass Power Plant in Can Tho city.

The working group visited the main areas in the Power Plant; listened to reports on technology, fuel, environment and operation of Hau Giang Biomass Power Plant.

According to the introduction, Hau Giang Biomass Power Plant is located in Long My ward, Can Tho city, invested by Hau Giang Biomass Energy Joint Stock Company (HBE), with a capacity of 20 MW (2x10MW). The main fuel used is raw rice.

Hau Giang Biomass Power Plant is the first plant in Vietnam to use biomass raw materials such as rice husks or agricultural by-products to generate electricity. The power plant consumes about 120,000 tons of rice/year to produce about 130 million kWh/year of electricity continuously and stably, thereby contributing to reducing about 201,600 tons of CO2 emissions into the environment. Using agricultural by-products as energy reduces environmental pollution.

The power plant has signed a contract to collect and transport rice husks and a contract to operate and maintain the Biomass Plant, contributing to creating jobs for local farmers and businesses.

Through discussing and learning about the activities of Hau Giang Biomass Power Plant, Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung highly appreciated the application of modern technology, safe and environmentally friendly operation of the Plant.

At the meeting, Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung said that An Giang province plans to plan and invest in 2 thermal power plant projects, including An Giang 1 and Nui To 1 thermal power plants. Currently, the province is carrying out procedures to invite investors, in which it pays special attention to the feasibility and implementation experience of investors.

An Giang 1 Biomass Power Plant in Vinh Gia Commune is expected to have a capacity of 50MW; total investment of VND2,934 billion. The main ingredients are rice, straw and agricultural byproducts, with a demand of about 260,000 tons/year.

The Nui To 1 Biomass Power Plant Project, in Tri Ton Commune, is expected to have a capacity of 20MW; total investment: 1,110 billion VND. The main ingredients are rice, straw and agricultural byproducts, with a demand of about 118,000 tons/year.

Mr. Mung said that An Giang province has a large area and source of bulk electricity materials, with the top rice area and output, along with great potential for investment in bulk electricity.

The province is interested in investing in thermal power plants to promote industrial development and increase the proportion of industry in the economic structure. At the same time, set a goal of inviting investors to implement a thermal power plant project accompanied by the implementation of a project of 1 million hectares of rice; handling rice and straw, reducing environmental emissions; ensuring quality, using new and modern technology.

Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung assigned the Department of Finance to guide and support investors in completing legal documents and procedures in accordance with regulations, shortening processing time, creating an open and transparent investment environment but still ensuring strict legality.
