On December 23, the Provincial Ethnic Committee held a conference to commend and honor typical examples of ethnic minorities in Kien Giang province in 2024.
Kien Giang province has 27 ethnic minorities, mostly Khmer and Chinese. The ethnic minorities of the province have a tradition of loving their homeland, solidarity, diligence, hard work, absolute trust in the leadership of the Party and State, and have actively contributed their efforts to the cause of national liberation, construction and defense of the Fatherland.
Kien Giang has 12/15 districts and cities with a large population of ethnic minorities, with nearly 70,000 households, more than 261,000 people, accounting for 14.9% of the province's population; 49 communes are designated as ethnic minority areas, of which 15 are particularly disadvantaged hamlets. In the period of 2023 - 2027, the province will select 285 prestigious people among ethnic minorities in districts and cities.
Mr. Danh Tha, Deputy Head of the Ethnic Minorities Committee of Kien Giang province, said that these prestigious people have done a good job in propagating and mobilizing people to implement the Party's policies, the State's laws and regulations, and local regulations; developing the socio-economy, reducing poverty, and building new rural areas. In addition, they have preserved, maintained, and promoted the national cultural identity and built cultural life in residential areas; maintained security, defense, and social order and safety in ethnic minority areas; built a grassroots political system and great national unity bloc, etc.
Typically, Venerable Ly Long Cong Danh, Abbot of Thuy Lieu Pagoda, Thuy Lieu Commune, Go Quao District, has built hundreds of bridges and rural roads, contributing to the construction of new rural areas and doing social charity work. In 2024 alone, the Venerable will mobilize the construction of 12 rural bridges in extremely difficult areas in the province, build 10 charity houses for households with housing difficulties; provide relief and help to poor households, those affected by natural disasters, and studious children of poor households, and carry out other social charity activities with a total value of more than 20 billion VND.
Or the shining example of Mr. Danh Hung in Phu My commune (Giang Thanh district) is a prestigious person among ethnic minorities in the border district. Mr. Danh Hung mobilizes people to actively participate in protecting the border, landmarks, national border markers and carry out activities to protect security and order in border areas, prevent crimes and social evils.
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Le Trung Ho, Vice Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee, commented: Prestigious people have made many contributions to the socio-economic development, contributing to the building of the province's political system. Prestigious people have performed well the role of a bridge between local Party committees and authorities and ethnic minorities. With their enthusiasm, responsibility and prestige towards the community, they have made very important contributions to the development of the locality.
Prestigious people among ethnic minorities are typical examples of advanced people and good deeds in the province, who have actively propagated and mobilized people to compete in labor production, economic development, sustainable poverty reduction, new rural construction; preserve, conserve and promote the fine cultural identity of each ethnic group, creating a great spread, multiplying the strength of solidarity, joining hands, building Kien Giang homeland to become increasingly prosperous, beautiful and civilized.
On this occasion, the Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee awarded certificates of merit to 2 collectives and 18 individuals; the Provincial Ethnic Committee awarded certificates of merit to 4 collectives and 62 individuals with outstanding achievements in the emulation movement on promoting the role of prestigious people among ethnic minorities in Kien Giang province in 2024.
