Tropical depression makes landfall, causing widespread rain

The tropical depression in the East Sea has made landfall in the area north of Hainan Island (China), then moved towards the East of the Gulf of Tonkin.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 7:00 AM on August 20, the center of the tropical depression was located at about 19.6 degrees North latitude - 111.3 degrees East longitude, in the sea area east of Hainan Island (China). The strongest wind near the center of the tropical depression was strong at level 6, from 39-49km/h, gusting at level 8.

The tropical depression is moving in a westerly direction at a speed of 5-10km/h. It is forecast that in the coming hours, this system will enter the mainland north of Hainan Island.

Forecast until 7:00 AM on August 21, the center of the tropical depression is forecast to be at about 19.8 degrees North latitude; 110.0 degrees East longitude, on land north of Hainan Island. Wind force level 6, gusts level 8. Disaster risk level: level 3 for the northwest sea area of the Northern East Sea.

By 7:00 AM on August 22, the tropical depression will move in the West-Northwest direction at a speed of about 5km/h, with the center position at about 20.3 degrees North latitude - 109.0 degrees East longitude, over the sea area east of the Gulf of Tonkin.

During this time, the tropical depression is likely to strengthen further, reaching level 6-7, gusting to level 9. The dangerous area is forecast to be in the range of 19.0-21.5 degrees North latitude; 108.0-1111.0 degrees East longitude. Disaster risk level: level 3 is warned in the sea area east of the Gulf of Tonkin.

From the next 48 to 72 hours, the tropical depression will continue to move in a West-Northwest direction, moving about 3-5km per hour.

Due to the influence of the tropical depression, Hainan Island and some neighboring areas experienced heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. From 8 am on August 20 to 8 am on August 21, some areas of Hainan Island, southern Guangxi, southwestern and eastern Guangdong are forecast to have heavy to very heavy rain.

Notably, the Northwest of Hainan Island and Southwest of Guangdong may experience extremely heavy rain, rainfall of 100-180mm. Heavy rain may cause localized flooding, affecting traffic and people's activities in affected areas.

The sea area in the Northwest of the Northern East Sea area has strong winds of level 6, gusts of level 8, waves 2-4m high, strong rough seas. From August 21, the sea area in the East of the Gulf of Tonkin will gradually have strong winds of level 6-7, gusts of level 8-9, waves 2-3m high, strong rough seas.

Ships operating in the above-mentioned dangerous sea areas are likely to be affected by thunderstorms, tornadoes, strong winds and large waves.
