Detailed schedule of traffic ban on Long Bien bridge and alternative directions in Hanoi

Dương Đông |

Hanoi bans all vehicles from crossing Long Bien bridge for 60 days. People and tourists need to update the road ban schedule and alternative directions of travel.

From 9 am on March 28 to the end of May 27, Hanoi will ban roads on Long Bien bridge in both directions to serve emergency repair construction.

According to the announcement of the Hanoi Department of Construction, the ban on vehicles on Long Bien bridge is to implement the project to repair the road section for pedestrians, motorbikes and rudimentary vehicles (on both sides of the bridge), while ensuring safety for the Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line.

During this time, the entire road section on Long Bien Bridge, in the direction from Bo De ward to Hoan Kiem ward and vice versa, is prohibited from traffic.

Alternative traffic diversion plan when vehicles are banned from crossing Long Bien bridge

To reduce congestion when the Long Bien Bridge road is closed, motorbikes and rudimentary vehicles are guided to move according to the following routes:

Direction from Bo De to Hoan Kiem: go along the Long Bien - Xuan Quan route, then turn onto Chuong Duong bridge.

Direction from Yen Phu, Hang Dau: move along Tran Nhat Duat street to the roundabout at the beginning of Chuong Duong bridge and then up the bridge.

Direction from Tran Quang Khai, dike 401: go up to the roundabout at the beginning of Chuong Duong bridge to circulate through the bridge.

During the time of traffic ban on Long Bien bridge, bicycles are still allowed to travel in both directions on the mixed lane of Chuong Duong bridge.

Long Bien Bridge is degraded, must be urgently repaired

Long Bien Bridge was built in 1899, completed in 1902, is one of the oldest steel bridges in Hanoi with a length of more than 1,690 m, including 19 spans.

After more than 120 years of exploitation and being affected by war, the project has seriously deteriorated. Many bridge spans have been replaced, only a part retains its original structure.

Although it has undergone major repairs in the period 1995 - 2010 and 2015, Long Bien bridge still has to bear a large volume of traffic including trains, motorbikes, bicycles and rudimentary vehicles every day.

In early February 2026, management agencies discovered serious damage at a steel truss intersection, threatening the safety of the project. This incident forced functional agencies to deploy emergency repairs and led to the decision to ban vehicles from crossing Long Bien bridge for 60 days to ensure safety.

During the time of traffic ban on Long Bien bridge (March 28 - May 27), tourists need to proactively adjust their travel schedules to avoid interrupting their sightseeing journey.

Travel time may be longer, especially during peak hours due to the volume of vehicles pouring into replacement bridges.

If there is a plan to visit and take photos of Long Bien Bridge, it is necessary to check the permitted access area in advance, as many locations may be barricaded for construction.
