Public opinion was stirred by the image of authorities handling a fire caused by a homemade battery left by a passenger at the security checkpoint and luggage screening at Tan Son Nhat International Airport on the night of July 30.
Although airlines and airports have baggage regulations, some passengers still do not know that power banks are prohibited items in checked baggage.
Below is a list of prohibited or restricted items in carry-on/checked luggage when boarding an aircraft, as recommended by Vietnam's national airline.
Prohibited items in carry-on and checked baggage
Prohibited items in carry-on baggage and checked baggage are items that are dangerous, harmful or may cause harm to people, property and flight crew. Prohibited items include:
- All types of explosives and items containing explosives.
- Flammable substances in gas, liquid or solid form.
- Oxidizing agents, organic peroxides and related articles.
- Corrosive substances, infectious substances, toxic substances and related articles.
- Radioactive materials and magnetic materials.
- Compressed gases and flammable substances.
- Types of organic detergents.
In addition, some airlines do not transport certain other items due to weight, size or characteristics.

Items are prohibited in carry-on baggage but are checked in
- Sharp objects, weapons or items similar in appearance to real weapons such as knives, swords, multi-purpose knives, darts, scissors, axes...
- Guns, bullets, structural parts of guns, bullets, electric guns, anesthesia guns, toy guns or items/toys that resemble real weapons and items with similar shapes. However, to check in these items, passengers need a permit from the competent authority.
- Tools, implements, and objects that can cause injury such as crowbars, hoes, drills/drill bits, torches, tools with blades longer than 6cm, hammers, wrenches, pliers with lengths over 10cm...
- Bats (baseball, billiards), hockey sticks, golf clubs, martial arts equipment, batons, self-defense sprays (tear gas)...
Items should not be checked in
Valuable items such as money, jewelry, cameras, camcorders, personal computers, mobile phones... should be carried in hand luggage and should not be checked in, to avoid the situation of damaged or lost product.
In particular, removable Lithium battery devices and backup batteries are only accepted for transport in hand luggage (not checked in).
Items shipped with conditions
Certain items may be carried in carry-on and/or checked baggage if specific conditions of carriage are met, including:
- Cash
- Food and drinks
- Liquids
- Medicines/makeup/sports and home sprays
- Lithium batteries
- Portable electronic devices (use batteries and spare batteries)
- Medicines tobacco and e-cigarettes
- Wheelchairs and mobility aids
- Suitcases/smart bags
- Dry ice and adhesives
- Ashes, remains or bodies
Particularly for removable Lithium batteries and backup batteries, the capacity or weight of the battery allowed to be transported is a maximum of 160Wh or 8g.
Each battery is individually protected and completely shut down, avoiding activation. All batteries and equipment shipped are for personal use only.
Note, each country has its own regulations on the list of dangerous items prohibited/restricted from being brought into restricted areas and onto aircraft. In addition, some places also have a list of types of luggage prohibited from entering the country, by region/country, posted on the information portal of the competent authorities. Passengers should pay attention when packing their luggage to fly.
