10 coldest cities in the world

The world's coldest cities have negative temperatures, covered in snow all year round.

1. Oymyakon, Sakha Republic, Russia

Oymyakon means "unfrosted water" in Russian. This remote town in Eastern Siberia has winter temperatures of -58 degrees F (-50 degrees Celsius. In 1924, the temperature reached a record low of -92.6 degrees F (-71.2 degrees Celsius). In fact, the water here can freeze at any time, so all water pipe systems must be installed outside the home to make it easy to use and repair when frozen.

2. Yakutsk, Russia

Located in the far east of Russia, Yakutsk is known for having the second most severe climate in Russia. Record lows of -84 degrees F (-64 degrees Celsius) have been recorded here throughout the winter.

Yakutsk has a population of more than 336,000 people and is located on a remote eternal iceberg. To avoid breaking the ice layer, many houses in the city have been raised above the ground. Water and gas pipelines also often run on the ground on the streets.

3. Harbin, Heilongjiang, China

Harbin is the largest city in Heilongjiang province and also the place with the coldest winter in the province. Harbin is often called the "Shanging City" with the annual September and snow festival.

In each winter, the temperature in Harbin drops to -30 degrees or lower. Most locals will advise tourists to stay away from Harbin in winter because the weather is too cold.

4. International Falls, Minnesota, USA

International Falls, Minnesota, is located on the Rainy River, opposite Fort Frances, Ontario, and is often considered the coldest city in the United States. This place is known as the "Icebox of the Nation".

5. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Winnipeg has always been ranked as one of the coldest cities in Canada, but it is also the most populous place in the country. The typical low temperature in this city in winter is nearly -20 degrees Celsius.

6. Fraser, Colorado

Fraser (Colorado) is located at 8,574 feet (2,613 meters) in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, home to about 1,400 people. Compared to International Falls, Fraser has a more temperate winter but the average annual temperature is lower, around -18 degrees in winter.

7. Dudinka, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia

Dudinka is a settlement on the Yenisei River in Siberia, Russia with a population of more than 20,000. The lowest average temperature in January is -28 degrees F (-33 degrees Celsius), while the highest average temperature is -12 degrees F (-24.5 degrees Celsius).

8. Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks in Alaska is another great place to see the spectacular Northern Hemisphere. Fairbanks is sometimes known as the "Golden Heart City" of Alaska, a densely populated area with about 100,000 people. This group of brave people live at an average temperature below 0 degrees F (18 degrees Celsius). Winter here has the lowest temperature in January at -22 degrees Celsius.

9. Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The capital of Mongolia has more than 1 million people living with an average January temperature of -12 degrees Celsius (-24 degrees Celsius). The extremely low temperature makes very few people dare to travel here in winter.

10. Nursultan, Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan in Central Asia is a barren, windy land with a long and harsh winter. The capital Nursultan is the coldest place in the country with an average January temperature of only 6 degrees Celsius (-14 degrees Celsius). Temperature dropped to -16 degrees F (-24 degrees Celsius) in October, which was also the time when the weather became colder. By November, the city's Ishim River is often completely frozen.
