Faial (also known as the Green Island) is one of nine islands in the Azores, Portugal. And every summer, the hydrangeas bloom on the island, creating a special and beautiful green carpet.
The volcano on the island has forced thousands of residents to evacuate. However, it was this outbreak that created an extremely fertile land. Water, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen chloride from the outbreak have made this land very fertile and acidic - the perfect place for the development of hydrangeas.
The soil is highly acidic, allowing hydrangeas to grow leaves and have high pigmentation. In Faial, flowers grow along the roadside, in the fields and along the hills. Each year, the flower appears more and more in many places on the island.
In Faial, hydrangeas are a characteristic of the area, so picking flowers will be considered illegal behavior.
