HUE - Excavation of phase 2 of Lieu Coc twin towers reveals many special architectural and historical values, opening the way for research on Champa cultural conservation in Hue.

The Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City has just coordinated with the National Museum of History to announce the results of the excavation phase 2 at the Lieu Coc twin tower relic (Kim Tra ward, Hue city), opening up many notable scientific discoveries.
Tu giua thang 5 den cuoi thang 6.2025, hai ho khai quat chinh voi tong dien tich 60m² duoc mo o phia Dong thap Bac va phia Bac - Dong thap Nam. Ngoai ra, hai ho tham sat bo sung voi dien tich 6m² duoc mo tai phia Bac thap Bac va phia Nam thap Nam.
From mid-May to the end of June 2025, two main excavation holes with a total area of 60m2 will be opened in the East of the North Tower and the North - East of the South Tower. In addition, two additional exploration holes with an area of 6m2 were opened to the North of the North Tower and the South of the South Tower.
Qua do, cac nha khao co da xac dinh duoc mat bang, quy mo va ket cau cua den thap Bac cung mot phan kien truc den thap Nam, dong thoi nhan dien dau tich he thong tuong bao quanh khu trung tam.
Thereby, archaeologists have determined the site, scale and structure of the North Tower Temple and part of the architecture of the South Tower Temple, and at the same time identified the remains of the wall system surrounding the central area.
Ket qua buoc dau cho thay Thap doi Lieu Coc la to hop kien truc doc dao, duoc quy hoach tren vung dat bang phang, nam gan song Bo, gom hai den thap chinh cung thap cong va he thong tuong bao phan dinh ro khu trung tam. Day la di tich dac biet, hien la cong trinh duy nhat o Viet Nam va the gioi co hai den thap tho chinh song hanh.
Initial results show that Lieu Coc Tower is a unique architectural complex, planned on flat land, located near the Bo River, including two main towers with gate towers and a surrounding wall system that clearly defines the central area. This is a special relic, currently the only project in Vietnam and the world with two main towers in parallel.
Theo cac nha nghien cuu, hai toa thap khong duoc xay dung dong thoi ma cach nhau khoang 10–20 nam. Thap Bac co nien dai tu cuoi the ky IX, con thap Nam duoc dung vao cuoi the ky IX den dau the ky X.
According to researchers, the two towers were not built at the same time but were about 10-20 years apart. The North Tower dates from the end of the 9th century, while the South Tower was built in the late 9th century to the early 10th century.
Ca hai thap deu co nen mong xu ly bang dat set pha cat va nen dam chat bang dat laterit do sam. Vat lieu xay dung chu yeu la gach, voi nguon dat set duoc khai thac gan di tich. Trong qua trinh khai quat, nhom khao co thu duoc hon 9.000 tieu ban, hien vat gom gach, da trang tri, do gom, do sanh, dat nung, bia ky va ca cac manh kim loai dong.
Both towers have a foundation treated with sand-mixed clay and a tight foundation made of dark red laterite. The main construction materials are bricks, with clay exploited near the relic. During the excavation, the archaeological group collected more than 9,000 specimens and artifacts including bricks, decorative stones, pottery, decorations, terracotta, Chinese beer and even pieces of copper metal.
Dang chu y la cac manh trang tri hinh dau bo bang da sa thach va dat nung – minh chung cho su ket hop da dang vat lieu trang tri trong giai doan xay dung. Du tung bi xuong cap sau nam 1306 va hoang phe tu sau 1945, Thap doi Lieu Coc van giu vai tro la dia diem tin nguong, voi nguoi dan tiep tuc den le bai, tham chi lap mieu tho Duong Phi (ba Chua Thap) truoc thap Nam.
The decorative pieces of the cow's head made of sandstone and terracotta are proof of the combination of diverse decorative materials during the construction period. Although it was degraded after 1306 and abandoned after 1945, Lieu Coc Tower still plays the role of a religious site, with people continuing to come to worship, even setting up a temple to worship Duong Phi (Miss of the Lady) in front of the South Tower.
Pho truong Phong Nghien cuu suu tam, Bao tang Lich su quoc gia Nguyen Ngoc Chat chia se, qua hai giai doan, dien tich khai quat moi chi dung o 150m2, hon 6% so voi dien tich quy hoach cua khu di tich 2.428m2.
Deputy Head of the Research and Collection Department, National History Museum Nguyen Ngoc Chat shared that after two stages, the excavation area has only stopped at 150m2, more than 6% compared to the planned area of the relic site of 2,428m2.
Trong khi do, ket qua buoc dau mang lai da cung cap nhieu cu lieu khoa hoc quan trong, dem den nhieu nhan thuc moi cung nhu van de con bo ngo, chua the nhan dien day du ve lich su, bo cuc, khong gian va tinh chat cua di tich. De co mat bang tong the mot cach day du va hoan thien nhat ve den thap Lieu Coc, cac nha khao co can tien hanh mo rong dien tich khai quat; tao tien de, dong luc nghien cuu, thanh lap mot khong gian dac thu hoac cao hon la mot bao tang van hoa Champa de tap trung cac hien vat, tu lieu ma Hue dang so huu nham gioi thieu, quang ba ve di san van hoa doc dao nay.
The initial results provide many important scientific documents, bringing many new awareness, as well as the problem of being left open, unable to fully identify the history, layout, space and nature of the relic. To have the most complete and comprehensive overall site for Lieu Coc tower, archaeologists need to expand the excavation area; create a premise, motivation for research, establish a special space or higher, a Champa cultural museum to focus on the artifacts and documents that Hue owns to introduce and promote this unique cultural heritage.
