The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the tropical storm, locally named “Kristine,” is the 11th storm to hit the Philippines in the 2024 typhoon season.
Typhoon Kristine was 1,050 km southeast of Luzon as of 5:00 a.m. on October 21, with maximum winds of 55 km/h near the center with gusts of up to 70 km/h.
“Kristine is expected to intensify into a tropical storm in the next 12 hours,” PAGASA said in its forecast. “It may attain severe tropical storm status by tomorrow afternoon or evening (October 22) and typhoon status by Thursday afternoon or evening (October 24), before making landfall in the northeastern part of Cagayan on October 25.”
PAGASA also raised the possibility of Tropical Depression Kristine strengthening as it moves over the Philippine Sea.
“As this tropical storm is still over the Philippine Sea, the possibility of intensification is possible, due to environmental conditions in the area favorable for development,” the state weather agency explained.
Meteorological experts predict that around October 24, the storm is likely to enter the northern East Sea.
Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to exercise caution, as the tropical storm may have minor to moderate impacts on life and property under these weather conditions.
