Forecast of storms appearing near the East Sea in August

The storm season of 2024 is unfolding with complex developments, especially in the area near the East Sea.

According to the latest forecast from meteorological experts, August may see 2 to 3 storms near the South China Sea, with a 70% probability of La Nina phenomenon. This situation poses many challenges for countries in the region, especially the Philippines.

Jomar Eclarino, a storm forecasting expert from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), told SunStar that besides the expected storms in August, the number of storms may increase in September and October.

This prediction aligns with the usual trend, as the peak storm season typically lasts from July to October, accounting for nearly 70% of the total storms formed in a year.

The La Nina phenomenon is expected to appear in the last three months of 2024 and may extend to the first three months of 2025. This contributes to increased rainfall and the number of tropical storms.

However, PAGASA forecasts that the total number of storms in 2024 will be lower than the annual average, with about 13-18 storms compared to the usual number of 19-20 storms.

For tourists planning to travel to countries in the Southeast Asia region, especially the Philippines, in the coming months, experts recommend closely monitoring weather reports and storm warnings.

Tourists should be flexible in adjusting their schedules, prepare contingency plans, and follow safety guidelines from local authorities.

Currently, PAGASA is monitoring a low-pressure area near the South China Sea, about 480 km north-northwest of Itbayat Island, Batanes province, northernmost Philippines (as of 3 AM on July 30).

This low-pressure area has moved from a position 335 km north of Itbayat on the afternoon of July 29, indicating rapid weather changes in the region.

To cope with the weather situation, tourism and hotel agencies at coastal destinations are enhancing safety measures and preparing emergency response plans.
