In 2025, Vietnamese workers will have 9 days off for Lunar New Year. The long holiday gives people more time to rest, return to their hometowns or travel domestically and internationally.
Mr. Ngoc Sang (office worker, HCMC) said that every year on the occasion of Lunar New Year, his family of 4 people wants to return to their hometown in Hung Yen to celebrate Tet and travel to the North. He tried to "hunt" for cheap tickets early but still could not avoid spending a large amount of money.
"Last year, my family spent more than 20 million VND just on round-trip airfare from Saigon to Hanoi. This year, the ticket price has continued to increase to about 7 million VND/round-trip ticket, my wife and I have to reconsider celebrating Tet in the South or going to the North by other means," said the male tourist.
According to a survey by Lao Dong on October 1, airfares for the 2025 Lunar New Year tend to increase compared to last year, especially for routes from the South to the North and Central regions.
Accordingly, the round-trip flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, departing on January 24-28 (December 25-29) and returning on February 1-4 (the 4th-7th day of the Lunar New Year), all have the lowest price of 6.8 million VND. The direct flight has the highest ticket price of about 7.5 million VND, for Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways.
The price of plane tickets for The Year of Zi Yi 2025 is almost as expensive as a tael of gold ring at present (about 8.1-8.2 million VND). The ticket price is 6-6.8 million VND higher than last year.
Round-trip airfares from Ho Chi Minh City to other provinces in the North and Central regions such as Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Chu Lai, Da Nang are also expensive. For example, round-trip tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh on January 24 - February 1 (December 25 - the 4th day of Tet) cost about 7.3-7.5 million VND, round-trip tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Hai Phong cost from 6.9 - 7.5 million VND.
On average, domestic flight ticket prices during The Year of Zi Yi are 5-8% more expensive than the same period last year.
However, the number of pre-booked tickets is not high yet. Ms. Giap Hai Linh - an agent in Hanoi, said that the number of Tet tickets sold is much lower than the same period last year. Currently, her agent has only recorded a few customers asking and booking tickets.
On websites, there are still many flight tickets to destinations, with a variety of flight times for people and tourists to choose from.
According to reports from Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air, ticket prices are unlikely to decrease due to increased costs for repairs, maintenance, and aircraft rental and purchase. The USD/VND exchange rate increased by 4.4% in the first half of the year, which also put financial pressure on the airlines.
On the occasion of Lunar New Year this year, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said that airlines will be able to add more aircraft and optimize operating time.
Vietnam Airlines plans to receive 3 more aircraft, Vietjet 10 more aircraft. Bamboo Airways and Vietravel Airlines also plan to expand their fleets to meet the increased travel demand during Tet and develop the market.
Sharing with Lao Dong, a representative of Vietravel Airlines said that in the period from January 14, 2025 to February 12, 2025, the airline plans to provide about 144,000 seats.
The airline will continue to work with aviation authorities to increase the frequency of flights on key routes including: Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi/Da Nang/Quy Nhon and Hanoi - Da Nang.
"All flights are offered by the airline with a variety of prices ranging from low to high, so passengers should book tickets as early as possible to have a higher chance of buying good tickets. For families with many members, booking tickets early is also a way to save on travel costs during this peak season," said a representative of the airline based in Hue.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has directed airlines to arrange and balance transportation resources, coordinate with ground service units to ensure appropriate load supply; launch early sales of air tickets for the Tet holiday so that passengers can choose and make appropriate travel plans; speed up the process of receiving new leased/purchased aircraft and put back into operation aircraft that have completed engine repair and maintenance from the manufacturer...
